It would have made sense in the 1960s, not sure about nowadays as his wife has nothing to do with it and will probably have to leave too. A jail sentence or/and depriving him from his civic rights would have been a smarter decision. Also why Germany and not Romania?

True, I reckon he thought he would get away with it, got maried and did not tell his wife. I still don't understand why he is sent to Germany whereas he was born in Romania. Besides do the Germans really want him?

Interesting how the media chooses to leave out specific information that changes the context of the situation. Mr. and Mrs. Hartmann were stripped of their U.S. citizenship and deported to their place of origin, where they immigrated from, due to their (plural) falsification of information to the United States Immigration Department.
