Re: Building Ooops!

Wonderful stuff!
Just made me cackle out loud.
I didn't know Werner von Braun had a hand in postwar military architecture too .
Google Earth Coordinates:
32°40'33.90"N 117°09'28.5"W
Well worth a look in context.
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Building Ooops!
You would think that the architect would notice it on the blueprints. Or was his name Albert?

Re: Building Ooops!
What's interesting is that this is on NAB Coronado in San Diego and I've been to that base numerous times. Probably been in the building itself too.

Re: Building Ooops!
I was actually thinking of you when I saw this, you being a former Navy puke ( ). I have not had the time to go to google earth to see where it was located. Interesting though.

You didn't notice any large black and red flags did you T.A.?
Or maybe 'unusual' saluting?

Re: Building Ooops!
The Coronado building is one of three enlisted berthing buildings on the base. See
Map of Coronado, CA by MapQuest
The other two are just west of it. The building just above it with the round dome and pool are an athletic complex with indoor basketball courts etc. The large building just across the street from the three barracks buildings is the dining facility.

Re: Building Ooops!
The military has been a creature of uniformity and it amazes me how that third building is significantly different than the other two.

Re: Building Ooops!
So it is shaped like a swastika, does it really matter? Is it going to make everyone who walks in there feel like a Nazi? Will it make everyone who sees it think we are a National Socialist nation? Can Horst Wessel be heard palying in little speakers hidden about the grounds? My personal opinion is we have more important things to worry about beside a building being shaped like the emblem of utterly defeated and despised foreign government that has not existed in over 60 years. Why is it so important now, how long has the builiding been there?
Next thing you know, somebody will be complaing about the fascines that make up part of Lincoln's chair in his memorial.
My 4 cents worth. (My opinion is now worth 4 instead of 2 cents after I got the correct answer to the number pillboxes making up the West Wall in the quiz thread.)

Re: Building Ooops!
The shape of that particular building or any other is very difficult to make ot looking from ground level. It might be an architect's joke, or it might be the way he found to arrange for dome peculiar architectural requirements. I don't know, never will, and I don't think it matters.

Re: Building Ooops!
A few other buildings on the base: The building on Munda and Tulagi roads is ComNavSurfPac. Worked there off and on for N4352 /4356. Across the street (Rendova) is the BOQ. The ones along Tarawa are mostly assigned to special warfare units of various sorts.
The one on the corner of Rendova and Guadalcanal is the HQ for US Navy special warfare and training command (eg SEALs, UDT, EOD). The one across the street with trees around it dates to the WW 2 era and used to be the HQ until they built the one they are in now. It in so-so shape today and houses hand-me-down commands that can't get the juice to get better digs. The one at the corner of Munda and Guadalcanal is a classroom building for a variety of courses (took CPO leadership there for example).

So I understand you never noticed any of these guys around corners or you'd already have mentioned it...

That group in the picture is part of a division based at Holloman AFB getting ready for the next invasion of the USA. They already have several squadrons of fighter/bombers at the ready.
