'Bulge' Tiger Locations - Then & Now....
I've been meaning to scan these old 35mm pics from previous expeditions to the Ardennes ( in 2003/4 ).
I had great fun finding the locations and, as usual, would never have been able to do so without the relevant 'After The Battle' publications.
Such a famous image of a King Tiger grinding uphill as a column of dejected US POWs is escorted toward Germany....
I wasn't that dejected as my Wife's little Rover 25 'stands in' for the Tiger outside Lanzerath, very near the Belgian/German border....
And this shot of Tiger '222' must be in just about every book ever published about the Battle....
Believe it or not, this is the same spot, taken from the same ditch where the original photographer stood 60 years before. The German Officer was standing just about where the small tree is, centre of pic.....
Every time I look at photos like this, I get the urge to go back - again.....

Re: 'Bulge' Tiger Locations - Then & Now....
It was real fun matching up the Lanzerath one....my wife was driving as I shouted 'Stop ! Right here !'. As usual, it was a totally insignificant spot on a quiet country lane, and even she had to admit it was an odd feeling to stand there and think of the 1st SS Panzer Division's Tigers on the offensive....

The 'Bulge' being in the Ardennes and you in London, how long of a drive is it by car? You drive in that channel tunnel? Scarey?

Re: 'Bulge' Tiger Locations - Then & Now....
Sounds/looks like a fun hobby. One of only a few things we have over here (but certainly not as dramatic as Tiger tanks) of WWII photos coupled with reminiscent locations are the German P.O.W. camps. Mississippi was home to a few...

No, it's easy. You can leave London very early in the morning, catch an 08:00 train at the Channel Tunnel, and be in the Ardennes in time for a late lunch of omelette, frites and a bottle of Belgian beer......

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel - Engineer Girl
The only thing around here that compares to the Channel Tunnel. I don't like driving it,myself.

...but you can't actually drive through the Channel Tunnel. You drive onto a kind of shuttle train at one end, and back off again at the other side about 40 minutes later. The risk of mid-tunnel accidents or breakdowns was considered too great.....

Re: 'Bulge' Tiger Locations - Then & Now....
I've been fascinated by the "then-and-now" approach ever since I first saw ATB's magazine in the 70s. Envious indeed am I over your (relatively) close proximity to the WWII battlefields in Europe, a mere several-hours/half-day's drive and you're there . . . living here in Virginia, many of the famous battlefields of the American Civil War are easily within a day's drive, and offer opportunities for then-and-now photos - alas the Civil War bug never bit me, so I have to settle for the occasional trip across the pond to the WWII sites. Keep posting those photos . . .

Re: 'Bulge' Tiger Locations - Then & Now....
OK, here's a couple of obvious ones - no Tigers this time....
How many people use this pedestrian crossing in the middle of Bastogne every day....
...without realising that some quite famous pedestrians once stood here ?
And - could this be one of the most-reproduced ( but staged ) images of the Ardennes Offensive ?
I reckon just about every 'Bulge Tourist' tries to re-enact this one....I just couldn't resist it ( opening the way for another load of 'Volkssturm' jokes.... ).....

I can see you running with a jerrican and a funnel, but you will find no petrol here Martin! Time to walk home. Nice picture, I really should start making these too.

Cheers Martin.
Wish I was in Belgium this week.
Serves me right for going on strike, can't afford it now.

Re: 'Bulge' Tiger Locations - Then & Now....
Thanks for the photos - I gotta plan another trip to a battlefield (if I can convince my wife !). I was in Normandy in 2000 and saw a lot of the "sites" but didn't try to identify any specific locations from their wartime photos. From your photos at Poteau, I guess by now any obvious wreckage/debris would have been noticed and appropriated, but have you ever seen any evidence of wartime detritus - shells, bullets, that sort of thing ?
