Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
Hitler was apparently a man of sentimental habit ; on one of his first visits to Nuremberg he stayed at the relatively modest Hotel Deutscher Hof near the Opera House.
After his rise to power, he continued to favour the Hotel and insisted on using the same room on every visit. Naturally, the cult of the Fuhrer ensured that the modest Hotel became very popular indeed - until the Nazi Party compulsorily purchased the entire building in 1936.
The Hotel bacame a major focal point of the annual Reichsparteitag ; on the morning of the second day Hitler would review a massed march-past of the Hitler Youth from his window. The Hotel can be seen briefly in Riefenstahl's 'Triumph Of The Will' propaganda movie.
Today, the Hotel is derelict and empty, and has been for nearly five years now.
Hitler's room was behind the third window from the left in the central block, first floor.

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
no kidding, a little cleansing and you'd be back in business, re-do the front Hotel door plus the goofy Hotel sign and bam ........ the front facade is charming but the windows have to go......
Martin what is the building crammed up into the side of the Deutscher Hof ? a parlimentary or other govt building ?

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
On the left side ? It's on the other side of the road from the Hotel and is, in fact, AH's beloved Opera House.....

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
Martin were you and the lovely wife able to view the interior of the Opera Haus ? I remember well my time in Wien and the political trumps even played in it's own Opera Haus back in the 30's and 40's, of course it has all been rebuilt, a beautiful facade, part of the old section with the Dom as the focal point, everything raised at some sort by the US 15th AF and later pulverized by Soviet artillery, all freshly back to somewhat of a norm. quite nice easy to get around by foot. we had gone down the old streets of the vendors and local flute, guitar players with well dressed snooty upstart opera audience; quite a neat cross over really. would go back again in a flash if given the chance

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
We ran out of time to see such things as the Opera House, the Castle, etc. Maybe next time ( when we can also see the Nuremberg Courthouse, the electric powerhouse for the Zeppelin Field, etc )

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
Nice photos Martin. I hope one day myself to visit Germany... I do have family there so I suppose I could kill two birds with one stone.

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
Terror, well it appears you have a place to stay then, take advantage of it, I am trying my best for the next year or so, too many places to visit and relatives seem to have the places and times pre-set for the future WW 2 and otherwise, they all know the Mrs. and myself are total history nuts. Nürnberg and Würzburg and the environs have much to offer

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
Just secured from e-bay, an interesting postcard showing the Hotel Deutscher Hof in its 'glory days' of 1935 ( note the added decorations.....)
The Hotel was burnt-out in the bombing raids of 1945 and the roof/top floor was rebuilt totally differently.....

Re: Nuremberg : Hitler's Hotel
( Mr Staton has left the room )
Sad to say, that was the only photo I took of the Grand Hotel ; we were hurrying for a train early in the morning and I sudddenly realised I hadn't taken any, so I took that one almost 'on the run'.....
