Re: The Germans who won the war
Brilliant stuff, this makes a refreshing change from the usual angle of Allied citizens fighting for the SS.
Wonder just how many German nationals fought in allied uniform?
Incredibly courageous thing to do when all around you are falling for the totalitarian plan.
It's proving rather hard to Google up any info on this, even his name seems too common (or too obscure), & I don't think I've ever read anything on the subject generally, other than internment and using certain chaps from that for intelligence work (and perhaps the odd Foreign Legionary..).
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: The Germans who won the war
Just shows how little the mindset of your average German changed in the post war years, that they viewed these men as traitors. Rather fits in with the idea that the German people saw themselves as fighting for their nation rather than Hitler I suppose.

Re: The Germans who won the war
courageous in early war for certain from late 44 till wars end it wasn't a big deal unless you lived in the larger major cities like Berlin. My relatives in most part lived along the Pfalz and tilled the soil, gave up sons for the Eastern war futilities, saddened even with that news they perserviered like many Germans of their time, trying to live somewhat of a normal life while Us fighters continually buzzed them and shot up their barns, and wagons thinking ammo was placed in them or they were hiding tanks in the scrappy brush. It was all part of life then. I have tired to get them to write their memories up of those times but it is memoreis they would all like to leave far behind them. They were ardent and still are German through and through and they hated the Nazi's, the party and all of it that it stood for

Re: The Germans who won the war
Mostly you don't hear anything about these Germans is because the fragging news media wants to portray ALL Germans as war criminals. Those of closed minds-or bird brains, just refuse to want to learn the truth. Dan Rather has the brain of a bird-therefore, he is a bird brain. I never did like him or his lefty reporting. Did you guys know that this is the jerk who coined the phrase: Baby Killers: and associated that term with our G.I.'s in Vietnam.

Re: The Germans who won the war
I've heard of Austrian Troops fighting under psuedonyms in British Units but not many Germans.
There was the famous Herbert Sulzbach who wrote "With the German Guns" about his time in WW1 in a German Artillery unit.
As a Jew he left Germany and served in the Royal Pioneer Corps , I believe the only German to serve in both Armies in two World Wars as an Officer.
See>>> Royal Pioneer Corps & Royal Pioneer Association
Has anyone got this book?
>> Amazon.com: Foreign Volunteers of the Allied Forces 1939-45 (Men-at-Arms): Books: Nigel Thomas,Simon Mccouaig
If so does it mention any Germans?
Mr Evans, isn't that rant at leftie media slightly off-topic for this thread?
Herbert Sulzbach's medals both German & British.
CAPTAIN HERBERT SULZBACH O.B.E.
SERVED WITH THE GERMAN ARMY 1914-1918
SERVED WITH THE BRITISH ARMY 1940-1948

Re: The Germans who won the war
What an astonishing set of medals, with an OBE too!, what's the red cross? Presumably some high WW1 decoration?

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
Quote:

To his Iron Crosses of the First World War, Herbert Sulzbach has added the German Cross of Merit 1st class and recently, the Grand Cross of the German Order of Merit to wear alongside his British medals of the Second World War. Granted British citizenship in 1947, he was given back German nationality, filched from him by Hitler, in 1952.

What a guy. Fighting against your country takes guts. Especially when your country is winning.

Re: The Germans who won the war
Overnight I was thinking about this and of course there were Germans in the Commandos.
No 3 Troop 10 Commando- Refugees from Axis countries (also known as "X Troop")
No 3 (Jewish) Troop, No.10 Commando
Quote:
|
No. 3 (Miscellaneous or "X" Troop) of the unique No. 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando/Special Services Brigade. The reason? They were virtually all German speaking Jewish refugees mainly from Germany and Austria (but also some from Czechoslovakia, Hungary and other European countries).

Other members who formed X Troop came from Germany, Austria, Danes ,Hungarians, the odd Czech and Russian and Rumanian.
