Far right disrupts German Nazi remembrance
Far right disrupts German Nazi remembrance
By Harry de Quetteville in Berlin
Last Updated: 2:11am GMT 31/01/2008
Elected politicians from Germany’s far right NPD party have refused to stand and honour the victims of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party.
Far-right groups remain a problem in parts of eastern GermanyThe German dictator became Chancellor 75 years ago on Wednesday, and many small ceremonies of remembrance for the millions killed by the Nazis were held across the nation.
But in the parliament building of the eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, six members of the NPD, or National Democratic Party, refused to take part in a moment of silence.
The state is home to Angela Merkel, the German chancellor. The parliament’s president Sylvia Bretschneider from the left of centre SPD party had called upon politicians from all parties to stand and reflect on the "end of liberty and freedom of opinion in Germany 75 years ago".
"Terror and violence were the end result," she said. "Anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia and an assault on democracy."
But the moment was disrupted when the six NPD parliament members remained in their seats, denouncing "tactical games and self-promotion".
"We won’t have anything to do with it," said NPD member Michael Andrejewski.
The parliamentary session was immediately suspended as politicians from other parties huddled together to discuss possible sanctions against the NPD.
Emblems and open gestures of Nazi affiliation such as the swastika and the straight armed salute are illegal in Germany.
Many mainstream politicians in Germany consider the NPD, which wants to reverse immigration and end German penance for the Holocaust, so offensive that they have repeatedly suggested it be banned.
In 2003, however, an official case before Germany’s constitutional court to rule the party illegal ended in failure.
The NPD, which won just over 7 percent of votes in the 2006 Mecklenburg state election, draws the bulk of its support from eastern Germany, where high joblessness and xenophobia is rife.

*Sigh*...
He looks like Albert Hinkel or whatever his name was.
What will the situation be like in 40 years, I wonder.

Those are the key-words. Give the people jobs, give the people a decent livleihood, give them money to go travelling and see the world beyond their bleak streets and they'll open their minds.
Nobody remains a neo-nazi after two weeks basking in the sun of the Seychelles...
Besides, we don't know the full story. What political games were going on?

Re: Far right disrupts German Nazi remembrance
Much as I might find these chaps distasteful I also never liked the idea of some kind of forced involvement in such activities. If you don't agree with what's being done then participation shouldn't be compulsory, even if you're wrong.
While fully understanding Germany's reasons for having such laws & sensitivities relating to the Nazi past I think they walk a very fine line on how they apply them.
Cheers,
Adam.
(And yes, that picture made me giggle. All these rather unimpressive people will ever manage is talking their way down the toilet )

I know 2008 is still young, but I'm going to go ahead and give this guy the "Shtoopid Shmuck of the Year" award. What a loser.

Believe it or not but there are such morons like these in Russia which honor Stalin. However they do not hold any public office and are usually the elderly.
Shame.

I guess there has to be some fringe Kook groups in every country that wishes for the "Good Ol Days". Unfortunately the "Good Ol Days" tend to be the more violent and murderous ones.

Re: Far right disrupts German Nazi remembrance
I am sorry to say we do have BNP in the UK. They are pretty much the dumbest bunch of muppets you could possibly come across. They have a big skinhead following and historically have obvious links with Combat 18 and the White Wolves. Really they are wanna be fascist thugs.
Interestingly, Combat 18 are believed to be directly linked to the Soho Nail bomber and strangely to sad cases such as this:
