Vandals have damaged a shrine created by Italian prisoners of war held during World War II at a now-defunct Army base near Campo.
Roger Challberg of the Mountain Empire Historical Society says it appears vandals smashed a glass cover protecting a statue of the Virgin Mary.
The little-known shrine was dedicated in 1944 and is one of the few reminders of 400 Italian prisoners who were once held at Camp Lockett. The camp was also the last home of the Buffalo Soldiers, a famous black army unit. It is unclear when the shrine was damaged but Challberg believes it was some time in the past few weeks.
