Supporting your troops!
After talking with a co-worker who servied 3 tours in Iraq, (and being injured on all 3 tours) I decided to do something to support our troops. I found this website, I'm sure there are many more of them out there, and I signed up! You can sign up to send them different things or just sign up to be a pen pal!
Well after talking to my buddy, he told me that they receive very little in the way of things from home! He received letters from family of course, but not much else at all! Listening to what he went thru on a daily basis was enough to prompt me to get up and do something for these brave men and women who serve our country.
I'll get off the soapbox now, but I hope that you too can find a rewarding way to help out too! Wherever you are from!!
Thanks
scott

Re: Supporting your troops!
Hi Scott, thanks for posting these. I have sent emails through the Show Your Support group and as well, I have the addy for India Company, 4th Platoon USMC, who are from my area and are in Iraq.
I sent these guys as much as I could at Christmastime. They got toothbrushes, lots of chewing gum, blue ink pens, 10 DvDs including the movies: Escape From New York and Cliffhanger. Also included was some chocolates, coolaid packets, packets of sweetener, a Christmas Card with Thomas Kincade artwork on the front, and among a few other items, I also sent them batteries, a package of cookies and a tablet of lined paper.
I was also thinking of starting and holding a "Penny Drive" to use towards sending them a huge box full of nothing but packages of cookies. Im told that that is one item they miss the most.
Forgot to mention, they also got a 3 page letter from me telling them about current events in my area, to any important news I could think of telling them as wellas making "Plugs" for this site and the John Wayne sites im on.

Re: Supporting your troops!
sadly have a relative serving behind enemy lines for his 3rd straight tour, nothing is going to get to him as it has to be top secret, another friend is not deployed and will serge a min1mum of 6 months to a year flying drones and the same thing will apply. Scott I am all for supporting our guys and gals overseas whether mid-east, Korea or even in safety zones in Germany. I've found that saying daily prayers for familie and friends can be very good and possibly enough to keep them protected besides full support from the Homeland

Hi Scott, thanks and, I found their address in my wallet so, i'll be sending you their addy by PM.
If anyone else wants it, send me a PM and I will gladly give it out. However, for me to do so, I will have to "know" you.

Re: Supporting your troops!
I originally put this in the WWII category because I wnated to add that I wanted to visit the local VA hospital and visit the troops there! Sorry i forgot to put that in the original post!
Also, I heard form the group I contacted and she told me that they need volunteers badly, she said that many troops don't have a family that can afford to send them the extras that we take for granted!

Re: Supporting your troops!
Just wanted to give you all an update, Saturday I got an email form the people handling this with the soldiers name and address and a likst of what he would like to get from back home! Today I went to the store and bought him a chess game some corssword puzzles, cookies, cup o noodles, lip balm, sun block, pens, paper and envelopes.
Also, I'm sending him some Spam, yes he wants Spam!! All this did not cost me much at all! I get a good feeling doing this, and I hope that this soldier gets a good feeling as well. Regardless of your political beliefs, these soldiers need our help!
You can be a penpal to these guys or ship them a care package every month! It's very easy. It's also very rewarding!
thanks, scott

Re: Supporting your troops!
Hi Scott, my thanks also goes to you for doing this. I don't remember how much my last package to Iraq cose to send but think it was about the same as yours. What I sent was: package of 10 ink pins, about 15 packets of coolaid, 12 packets of chewing gum, about 10 or so DvDs, some lip balm, several toothbrushes, a card and a 3 page letter.
I can't remember if I stuck anyhting else in there or not?
Getting ready to send another package. This one will have cookies, can of SPAM, more chewing gum, some hard candy I got on sale at WM, some toothpaste, and a few copies of photos from my WWII German HH PK press photo collection. I was complimented the last time, on my page-long history lesson about the fighting on the Eastern Front (Stalingrad) so I figured to give a few pics to go along with the story. The Marine that wrote back to me thought it was a great idea to write about a historical event and said that he would show this off to a group of kids he plays Soccer with.
To me, thats thanks enough ;-D

Hey Carl!
I sent Spam too! You just made me think of something! This troop asked for crayons and coloring books, and my first thought was that it was for his kids, but obviously not! But I'll bet he wants those to give to the Iraqi children!! Thanks Carl, I'll have to get that stuff for next months care package!

Re: Supporting your troops!
Wonderful ideas. I'm glad you posted this thread, Scott. Now if I can just find something for Canadian troops. CFPSA :: Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency - Corporate :: National News Centre
I know that at Christmas the Army actually made a point of getting it out in the news for us to NOT send anything to the troops in Afghanistan. Hopefully, it was just to ensure they got their family parcels through.... A-Channel | NEWS | Gifts For Canadian Soldiers In Afghanistan
I wonder whether there would be a problem sending stuff from Canada to the US Troops if I couldn't support the Canadians?

Re: Supporting your troops!
Thanks Michelle,
I did a quick search and found a site for you! I hope this helps!!
Canadian Angels
It would be great if everyone from their respective countries could take a little time to help out!
I spent maybe an hour or 2 at the most, and probably 20.00 for everything I sent out!

Re: Supporting your troops!
There are similar drives for British troops, mate of mine goes to Afghan next week and has loads of people boxing up assorted niff naff and trivia for him as requested to 'keep up morale.' As long as it is under 2kg you can send it for free so his first box will contain some lightweight ski's

Hi Scott, thanks ;-)) Also, I sent several packages of Lipton instant soup mix. Im also thinking of sending some of those rice and or pasta mixes, that Knorr makes and sells.
PS, please let me know when you get a reply from that address to that platoon of Marines I sent to you. This way, I can mention it to the recievee-of my next care package and see if he can say who recieved it. Since I don't know any of these Gents by name, I don't know who will get my next package-until he replies that is

Hey Stefan!
That's great to hear that you can support the British troops! I wonder if anyone from another country can tell us if they have a similar program?
Hey Carl!

I'll let you know as soon as I get it!
Thanks!!

Re: Supporting your troops!
I think most nations do, at the very least most have free/very reasonable postage rates to their troops overseas. Actually I'm surprised they charge you folks in the US to send packages, as I said over here it's free for 2kg so you just make up several packages.

Re: Supporting your troops!
Hi Scott, Stefan,
Scott, thanks, i'll be looking forward to hearing about it ;-D
Stefan-I only wish we had a free parcel service here. I don't see that ever happening here as the US Postal System is in it only for the money and not the service. :-(
Just this morning, I had a 2 page letter that went to Germany and that cost me over $5 bucks. :-((
