Re: Bevin Boys praised
Agreed! My Grampy was a Bevin Boy, wanted to be a gunner in the RAF (his brother was a pilot flying Stirlings) and as I understand it when he went to volunteer they said 'oh no you don't, you are going down a mine' (words to that effect). Glad he did because he would never have met my grandmother otherwise.
The Jimmy Savil quotes paint a very pretty picture, not sure it was like that everywhere. I know my grandfather was involved in cave ins and lost friends in the pits.
But yes, about time they received some recognition.

Re: Bevin Boys praised
Indeed, the war effort involed many, didn't it!

Bleeve I'd taken my chances on an airplane. I don't care for being underground.

Re: Bevin Boys praised
They didn't get a choice in the matter, conscripted as miners.

Re: Bevin Boys praised
We often forget that many served who didn't have a choice regarding what they did. Glad to see they got recognition.

Re: Bevin Boys praised
If any of you guys get the chance to buy The Forgotten Conscript; a history of the Bevin Boys by Warwick J. Taylor, do it. The author is a past chairman of the Bevin Boy Association, and some of the recollections will curdle your blood.

Re: Bevin Boys praised
It's just a shame it took so long to honour them but I suppose better late than never.
