Re: Bletchley Park's bleak future
What an absolute shame!
The path to today's computer technology lead's directly back to the door to Turing's workshop - the Turing Engine was the great-great-ever-so-great granddaddy of this chunk of plastic and glass that I spend my days staring into. I was really surprised to see that the Gates' Foundation wasn't interested in providing any funds - it seems like such a perfect fit!
Ah, well..... in a world without walls and fences, we wouldn't need Windows or Gates!
Thanks, Gordon, for letting us know the museum's dire financial straits.

Re: Bletchley Park's bleak future
Why the heck is it not entitled to Lottery funding.....
Maybe if Gordon received a letter at the moment he would do the popular thing, Mr.Brown seems to be trying lots of those things these last 2 weeks.
Could also ask him to send a contribution in lieu of the tv licence he doesnt pay and charges to his expenses.
Feeling our pain he is, one of us he is, Maybe we should at least start an online number 10 petition....

Ditto for me. This is a very important historical site and it is an outrage that Lottery Money cannot be made available ( but we all know that a certain hop, skip and jump event is soaking up vast amounts of that funding source ).

Well I hope that this article will drum up some attention to this cause! It would truly be a shame to lose this historical site.

Re: Bletchley Park's bleak future
Bletchley's had that sad and struggling feel for a long while, the huts look like they need serious work as water is penetrating most and some seem positively derelict.
It feels when you're there like there's not enough of a coherent plan for the place as bits have been 'bolted on' over the period of it's initial rescue. The strange little private museums scattered about are charming but perhaps detract from it's appeal to the more general visitor rather than the ww2 nerd.
I hate to say it but it may need some more 'lightweight' attraction to drive off the (pleasing to me) amateur feel, they've managed it on the main building but the site's so big I can see how it swamps all attempts to move on.
One thing we can do to help is visit the place more, there's some friendly & knowledgeable people on site & fascinating stuff to see, Colossus is far from their only attraction.
Bletchley Park
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Bletchley Park's bleak future
I agree Von Poop time to fill the motor up and go visit I think. It's sickening to see that even the National Lottery won't help.

It has been deemed ineligible for funding by the National Lottery
|
WHY?
The National Lottery to busy giving the extra cash to people who don't need it & tin pot silly organizations.
