A WORLD War II semi-automatic rifle and hand grenades have been seized by Customs at a house in Melbourne.
A 46-year-old man from the suburb of Skye is expected to be charged following the seizure of the .30 calibre M1 carbine.
Other military memorabilia including two inert and one replica hand grenades were also seized by Customs investigators.
Customs was initially alerted to the haul on June 15 when investigators at Melbourne's international mail centre discovered a rifle barrel for an M1 carbine sent from the US.
Police and Customs officers raided the house in Skye, in Melbourne's south-east, yesterday.
Customs national investigations manager Richard Janeczko said officials had spoken with a 46-year-old man about the seizure.
"The maximum penalty for this kind of offence is a fine of up to $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment," he said.
Australian law prohibits importation of firearms and firearm parts without prior permission.
