Default I didn not know that!

Popular Science, September 2009, page 92.

Following World War II, fighter jets were converted to take radio-control orders from a mother plane packed to the brim with electronics. The fastest jets in the U.S. at the time, Hellcats [above] responded to various frequencies commanding them to dive, climb or turn.

I wonder how well they performed and how far they could get from the controlling aircraft?

What I was chuckling about was the fact that Hellcats were "jets".

However, to get you started on the question:

Quote:
A small number of Hellcats were converted in Drone F6F-3K by installing radio control equipment and were used during A bomb testing in Bikini islands to fly through a radio active cloud and later in Korea as flying bomb guided on enemy bridges at the North. These were after the war used as Flying target.

Hey guys !
Just tid bit, There was an aircraft that had both a radial engine and a general electric I-16 turbojet engine. The Ryan Model 28 FR-1 Fireball. Navy pilots used to love to pull up to an unsuspecting aircraft, shut down the radial engine and pull away at a very fast pace.
