Default World War II bomb explodes in German building site

"Wilhelmshaven - A World-War-II bomb exploded after being unearthed in a in the north German port city of Wilhelmshaven, police said Sunday.

None of the three builders present were injured in the explosion, which happened during the night from Friday to Saturday.

The bomb went off when it was sucked up by specialist machinery used to excavate the port, causing an estimated 100,000 euros (147,000 dollars) of damage.

'It was just a question of time before something like this would happen. We can just be happy that nobody was hurt,' a police spokesman said.

From time to time, the tide washes unexploded World-War-II bombs into the city's port. In August, a 250-kilogramme bomb was discovered and detonated in a controlled explosion."

Default Re: World War II bomb explodes in German building site

Glad to hear that nobody was hurt or killed.

I visited Wilhelmshaven in Sept 2000, and we stayed at a Botel-(Boat-Hotel) which was maybe a mile from a huge building that had a large hole in its roof caused by a bomb blast. One wonders if it could have been the one and the same building that I saw? I took a few pictures of this building through the Periscope that was on this East German Minesweeper that was part of the Ships Museum there-located on Jadestrasse.
