"London's Second World War veterans have been encouraged to return to the places where they saw action, with the help of cash from the Big Lottery Fund.
More than 550 veterans, widows, spouses and carers have used money from the Heroes Return 2 programme to visit places of emotional importance and remember those who never came home.
Many people have used grants for up to £5,500 to pay for trips to the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France, or Holland's memorial events for Operation Market Garden, where almost 1,500 British troops died.
Jack Lancaster, 86, from Ashford, Middlesex, used a grant to visit Normandy for the D-Day anniversary in June with his son and daughter-in-law. He was one of the first waves of troops ashore in 1944 and only half of his unit survived the first day."
