A World War II veteran's story: George Schmidt of Saginaw Township
"George Schmidt, 87, of Saginaw Township served in World War II during the Battle of Guadalcanal
The morning of Nov. 13, 1942, remains clear in his mind. A Japanese battleship had been disabled, and Schmidt was assigned to fix damage to the USS San Francisco’s paint locker damaged the night before.
Schmidt, a carpenter’s mate, first class, recalls how night battles were frequent. He looked outside and heard the warning that torpedoes were approaching off the port bow.
“We ran aft,” he said.
The San Francisco turned, and the USS Juneau, stationed parallel to the San Francisco, became the target.
“They didn’t see it coming,” Schmidt said. “It was just a great big smoke, as high as you can see, and the Juneau was gone. Sank right there.”
