These days you always hear about how Britain was able to withstand the German attacks on a daily basis and how heroic the Brits were. To go along with this is the famous Miracle of Dunkirk where once again it has been made out that the British were able to heroically escape being trapped by the Germans

Yet in reality it was nothing like that. Hitler had the ability and could of very easily destroyed Britain and the troops at Dunkirk. However he wanted to make it out to the British that...

For Britain, the period of the ‘phoney war’ ended four months after Dunkirk. Initially, the bombing of British cities was a mistake. Prior to September 1940, the Luftwaffe had concentrated their attacks on coastal targets in Britain and on shipping. However, on 23 August 1940, the Luftwaffe accidentally dropped some bombs over London. In retaliation, the Royal Air Force (RAF) bombed Berlin. Hitler was furious and ordered attacks to commence on London. The Battle of Britain lasted just...

The OKW had never seriously considered an invasion of Britain in 1939. On July 16, 1940 Hitler issued Directive No 16 stating that an invasion was necessary "to eliminate the English homeland as a base for the carrying on of the war against Germany, and should it be necessary to occupy it completely". Shipping was assembled, including large barges converted into landing craft and the Army began training for amphibious operations. The German Navy proposed two major beachheads, one between...
