I must say, Kai, I looked at several sources for this and I rather think that maybe the exact figure will never be known for sure...

But I'm certain it was more than one tank !

Now I'll have to go away and think of a question.... :(

OK, here's an esoteric Bomber Command question....

At the end of the 'Battle Of Berlin' in early 1944 gold watches were presented to the crew who had flown the most Berlin raids.

They were a gift from Senor Adalbert Fastlich of Panama, whose brother had been killed during the London 'Blitz'.

How many Berlin 'ops' had the fortunate crew flown ?

    (NO Hi-Jacking intended here...)

I recently got a copy of Klages' Trail of the Tigers... I'll check tonight on what he says about Tiger Is in BoB.

However, as Martin knows, this number will be inaccurate.
    ;)

(Actually, Klages would likely be one of the best sources for this- his Trail of the Tigers is simply incredible!! IF there is an accurate number for this, he will have it!)

    :D :D

I've been "around"... just WAY too busy to post until this past weekend (earning a paycheck has a whole new meaning...)

If I may... in answer to Kai's question- 8

(All from Ron Klages' "Trail of the Tigers")

s.Pz Abt. 301 (Fkl) was scheduled to participate in the Battle of the Bulge... but by 25th December 44 the 301st was relocated to the area around Norvenich and put in reserve. They would not be activated unti 16 January 45, when they were moved to the Ruhr area.

    s. Pz Kp. "Hummel"... attached to s.Pz.Abt 506
Operated around Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Tiger I inventory for s.Pz.Kp "Hummel"-

Dec. 44- 8 Starting Inventory, 8 Ending inventory
Jan. 45- 8 starting inventory, 3 combat losses, 5 ending inventory
Feb. 45- 5 starting inventory, 5 transferred out.

Klages' work focuses only on numbers and strengths- no action reports. All info provided there is that the unit was in action around Bastogne, then retreated on 17 Jan 45 to defensive positions near Brachtenbach, Germany.

So... I'm absolutley shocked to find this... but it seems sources disagree as to the exact number of Tigers participatng in the BoB. ;)

(I hope you gents don't expect me to come up with the next question- I stink at trivia!!)

As I recall the number of raids during the Battle of Berlin was 16. So if 16 is "pretty darn close" I'm going to guess...15!

(Sheesh, guessing at the quiz, how pathetic...)

Well, I don't dare guess anymore....

Just want to say Hats off to anyone flying more than one mission to Berlin. I tried to look up the answer in Bombers Over Berlin by Alan Cooper but couldn't find it. Can't put the book down however...

One of my first and most exhaustive research projects was about a 78 RCAF Sqn Halifax that was shot down on 22/23 May 1944 by (I believe) Lt. Scherfling. This crew had been to Berlin about (I believe) six or seven times when they were shot down on their (I believe) 17th mission. Numbers could be wrong. Have to look that up... It has been a long time since I did that research...

21? No, I can't believe they'd sent a crew that many times to Berlin.

No, maybe it's Martin's impossible questions...

You have to have lived these experiences to know them! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
