I need some help from the group.

About 20 years ago, I purchased a Type 98 gunsight that came from a crashed Japanese Zero. It is in great condition considering a few cracks to the casing and reticle bar from the crash impact. Casing is made of bronze (I think) and some other metal alloy that I can't identify. (Gunsight weighs about 20 lbs.) The access panel to the compartment that houses the light bulb is missing (also this panel would have held the dataplate.) The original lightbulb is present, but broken...filament wires still present. Reticle and pip (both slightly bent) are permanently stuck in their present position. Dimmer switch is also stuck. Original glass lens still present, but frosted over. (see photos)

I know these gunsights don't fall from trees these days, because they didn't 20 years ago. Anyone have an idea what this may be worth today??

    Hello Herr K -

I'm no expert here on Japanese militaria, never has been my field of expertise, but having lived out here on the west coast of the U.S. all my life, ( well o.k., except for my military service ) I'd have to say that you have something of value there, not only to militaria enthusiasts in general, but aviation buffs, etc. I've never seen one previously to your posting the pic, but it does appear to be in very good condition for having come out of a crash sight. Although I don't feel educated well enough to give you an exact value, I would imagine in the right circles, it should bring a few dollars.

About the only Japanese militaria we see in any abundance out here are Arisaka rifles, Nambu pistols, helmets, bayonets, etc. Even Japanese tunics, and caps don't show up that much.

    Just my thoughts.

    Bill
