I am writing a book of dedication to the men of a little Cheshire village who died in WW2. I should like to include a general page of Medal Illustrations.
As all three services were represented by the 12 who died I should like to know, aside from Gallantry Medals, what the men would be entitled to. I know that each would have received a War and Defence Medal but am not sure about campaign medals and if there were seperate medals for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Geoffc

    Hi Geoff--welcome to the forums.

I would suggest sending a PM to any of our forum members from the UK or England. They would have a better idea than I have as I only collect German items.

Try Martin Bull, Martin Bishop (Bish) ((Currently serving with the British Army in Iraq))on the forums. Or try my friend Paul who dose alot of posting in the Knights Cross recipients thread--he was also in the Royal Army at one time.

    Hi Geoffc,

In geeneral there were no seperate awards for Army, Navy or RAF to my knowledge with the exception of the air crew europe star, Battle of Britain clasp and air crew europe clasp which was only awarded to Air crew,

Here is a list of all the campaign medals and clasps which were awarded for WWII, not every soldier got a clasp for his/her medal.

1939-45 star - could have Battle of Britain clasp (awarded to the few)

Atlantic star - could have Air crew Europe or France and Germany clasp

Air Crew Europe star - could have Atlantic or France and Germany clasp

Africa star - could have 8th Army, 1st Army or North Africa 1942-43 clasps

Pacific star - could have Burma clasp

Burma star - could have pacific clasp

    Italy star - no clasps

France and Germany star - could have Atlantic clasp

    Defence medal

    War medal 1939-45

Do you know where the 12 men were killed? as it would help a bit as if they were killed in the European campaigns 1939-41 (France, Norway, Greece, crete etc) they would have only got the 1939-45 star, war and defence medal and no other campaign medals.

    Hope this helps a bit,

Also please can any forum member correct me if any of the above is wrong as I have only just started getting into British medals again.

    Best Regards
