That is really nice !! Do you happen to know what kind of aircraft the Germans thought of as a short range night fighter ? Wild Boar fighters perhaps ?
Short-range night fighters were the FW-190s and I believe the Me-110s might have qualified. I know the Ju-88s and Do-17s were considered long-range. Maybe a good thread to discuss long- and short-ranges! Bob Thank you Platton. Actually, this is no longer in my collection, but I'll show y'all the Short-Ranged Day Fighter Clasp in Gold that I have attached to the Bretschneider dress jacket!
wonderful piece Bob......... in reality the wild sau and heel ncht sinlge engine pilots did not weat the shotr range or any claps for that matter. The do 17, 217 and Ju 88 plus heinkel 217 and bf 110G-4 were also short range over the reich and it seems that it was chnaged towards wars end. The Fernenacht missions over the UK in 40-41 by NJG 3 Ju 88C pilots brought them a long range inruder clasp. I hope this makes some sense as I am quite ill
Here is the Luftwaffe Short-Range Day Fighter Clasp in Gold for 60 sorties. This is the one that I have on the Bretschneider tunic. It is an unmarked piece. Close up of the center. Notice that the design is the same as the one above; however, this one is in Gold and the wreath isn't painted black: And a really nice Assmann-marked Luftwaffe Pilot's Badge:
Here is a Luftwaffe Bordfunker Badge that I bought from Bill Shea and then donated to the Luftwaffe Night Fighter Pilots Association, actually the JG-73 that maintains their museum. I also donated an Iron Cross First Class. At the 2002 reunion they had all of their collection set up in the officer's mess and I noticed they didn't have either one of these badges. So when I returned in 2004 I donated these. At that time they had built a new officer's mess and were in the process of building a museum so the collection was not available for viewing.
