Why I don't like John Wayne

I always thought the Duke was an a##hole anyways, this just confirms it. Except for the meal thingy.

 

Could you believe if I tell you that I have not seen a Joh Wayne's film ever?

 

I never cared for John Wayne either or for Bob Hope for that matter. I also don't like apple pie.

I kinda agree, I read somewhere John phoned the pentagon and asked what he could do to help sway public opinion "for" the Vietnam war....hence the "Green Beret" drivel that starts off with an obvious propoganda "news conference" where he explains the reasons for being there.....So contrived!!!

But man I like a couple of his westerns. the Cowboys and the Train Robbers being my favorites.

Well--at least someone likes his weaterns like I do.

My favorites being: Allegheny Uprising (Where he helps whip the British--Sorry Martin--Bish--Paul--Urgh et el.)

HONDO--where he plays a US Cavalry scout named Hondo Lane. This was taken from the book Hondo by: Louis La'Mour.

Another great J.W.Western is the one set during Christmas Time called: "Three Godfathers" which is one of my all-time favorite Westerns. It also has great actors like: Ward Bond--as the Sheriff--Harry Carry Jr as "The Kid" and Pedro Armeendariz as "Pedro" I absolutely love this fine film.

Then add in other greats like:
Fort Apache: With: Henry Fonda aas the Cav Colonel, Ben Johnson, Victor McLaglen as the Sergeant, Ward Bond as the Sgtmaj, Shirley Temple as The Colonels Daughter. John Agar, and many many other great actors.

Rio Grande--is another fav as well as The Searchers.

As you can tell--I grew up watching and being a John Wayne fan--I have well over 100 of his movies and TV appearances on tape. And proud of it.

Give him a try and watch his Forign Legion Serial--called: The Three Musketeers.

Also--give his earlier westerns a try--for a laugh--watch all of the ones called: The Three Mesquiteers. Some also had Ray "Crash" Corrigan, in them.

 

Dont apologise Carl, I particularly liked his performance in Sands of Iwo Jima??

I always though JW was a pretty bad actor. Never someone I could take seriously like sean connery or harrison ford. BUT, I do still kinda like him just for cheesey american pop culture value, kind of like how I feel about elvis. There are some that think he's the best, and I think he's closer to the worst. But I still like a good john wayne tuff guy movie, no matter what.

Although, I do kind of think that he brought the quality of the longest day down a little bit.

Doc sit down and watch The Searchers from begining to end some night, then tell me John Wayne was a bad actor, he was limited, but in the right role he was excellent.

One of the funniest things i ever saw was on the 70'2 sitcom "Maude" as let wing as Hollywood gets. On one episode she is ranting about some of the remarks John Wayne has made. She rants and raves for most of the show. At the end the doorbell rings and when she answers theres John Wanye standing there. She gapes at him for a minute and then says "Oh, what the hell, lets dance!"

 

To all of you Duke haters, I reply as he would himself, "Fill your hand you son-of-a-bitch!"

Man, I'm really sorry, but john wayne HAS to be one of the sh*ttiest actors to ever walk the face of the earth!!! I like him as a pop culture icon or what ever, but seriously, he sucks!!! He played the same character for 50 years and he still couldn't get it right! The best was in Sands of Iwo Jima - "look - out...gre-nade". Oh man, I watch his movies all the time, and REALLY kind of like them, but I could NEVER take him seriously

Why was he number one? Cause the american public seems to love sh*tty actors and sh*tty movies. What's big now? Queen Latifa? Keaneou (how ever you spell it) Reeves? (He sucks even more). The new star wars movies? The Matrix? (I'm seriously asking, I don't even have cable) Yech!! Independence Day did really well when it came out, and that had to have been the worst movie ever made!!!! (This coming from a fan of Plan 9 from Outer Space)!!!

So he tried to enlist in WWII? Wow. Over 16 million other americans DID enlist in WWII.

I kind of understand, but really, I grew up on smurf cartoons, and that doesn't mean I still take them seriously. John Wayne was a terrible actor. The LAST thing we need now adays is another fake. I'm not trying to rag anyone's "hero", but you've gotta be kidding? We know all these vets and an actor is a hero? I don't believe it.

Well, Jerry Lewis was #1 in France for 30 years, so I guess looking at that I really do like John Wayne.

 

Im not a big fan of the Duke but thought he was outstanding in the Searchers, then theres Red River, The Cavalry Trilogy and my Personal fave The Shootist, that he could play an ageing character in She Wore A yellow Ribbon and another in The Shootist nearly 30 years later shows he had more range than people credit him with.

It depends on whether people judge him for his politics, lack of participation in the war or his film roles. But I guess he became an icon because he represented on screen what most people consider to be honourable virtues, courage, humanity and self sacrifice.

Despite what I said at the beginning of this post I now sound like a John Wayne fan, im not but like a lot of his movies.
