Been spending much of my time with my Dad lately and watching John Wayne films. The last we watched this week was Rio Grande. Great and ageless movie, Carl!

Hi Fal/ you can definately say that again. I love the John Ford/John Wayne Cavalry "Trilogy". In this order of preferance too: Fort Apache, Rio Grande and then She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

Everything about Fort Apache was great--the cast, plenty of Injun action-the acting-the scenery yadda yadda yadda. My most favorite scene in the movie is when it's just after the 4 Sergeants were asked to destroy Meechams Frontier Whiskey-and of course the Sgts destroy it by drinking it all-well, you see one of the Sergeants (Victor McLaglen) looking so depressed-as he is watching Sergeant Major Michael O'Roarke (Ward Bond) approaching the Guardhouse to get all four former sergeants out to march them to the Manuer Pile-so that they could work off their drunks, by shoveling $hi!. That scene cracks me up everytime I see it.

Rio Grande was great and I loved hearing the Sons of the Pioneers sing in it.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, comes in third for me because of the (on purpose) hammy acting.

A Classic-that it most certainly is ;-)) This is also my favorite movie w/ J. Carroll Naish in it-as he's playing General Sheridan-my favorite Yankee General BTW ;-))

Chill Wills as the Dr-is hilarious. "Your going to get busted for this Quincannon".

This was an early role for Ben Johnson-who was a Rodeo Star and also known as one of he worlds best Horsemen.

Claude Jarman Jr. was also good. Harry Carey Jr also did a good job of acting in this movie. Unbilled-and as one of the Regimental Singers (who really were The Sons of the Pioneers) is Ken Curtis-who later became known as US Marshal Matt Dillons (James Arness) Deputy Festus Hagen.

Great movie poster artwork. Do you know who the artist was who did that oster art? none other than Mobius-who also did the artwork on many-a-great book--especially the Lieutenant Blueberry books. I'd love to have an original copy of the poster you posted here.

This is almost the exact kind of quality artwork that you got in the Mobius and Jean Gerard "Blueberry" books.

The question is why anybody could not like John Wayne, the guy had a kind of magic about him.

For Microsoft FS2004 fans, the TOPAC DC 4 featured in "The High and the Mighty" is available at Cal Classics

    Douglas DC-4's

Hi Adrian, I can't fathom why some poeple do not like Duke-but several years ago, someone started a Why I Don't Like John Wayne thead-and later on, I started this one as a counter to the other thread. Back in those days, I was "baiting" some of those who posted anti-Duke posts-by making it look like I agreed with them on some issues. However, when I saw things said about Duke that are simply not true-that is when I decided to start this thread and to set things straight.

I think one of the posts that did it for me was when someone said something about Duke being racist and or something about Duke hating Mexicans--which certainly was not ture. Every Wife he had was Hispanic ;-))

Quite true. Also, did you know that he was made an Honorary Hopi Indian-and I think he was also made an honorary Apache and Navijo Indian as well.

Watched this the other night damn, where did they find the kids that played the "COWBOYS" to put a bunch of kids who i assume were unknown opposite the Duke was surely a risk but it worked. It never ceases to amaze me how much i am enjoying watching again all the Duke films I first watched back in the 70's and 80's cant wait for my next find.

Speaking of Duke likin to use unknowns in many of his movies, he was real "big" into being helpful with trying to help many peoples careers to get off the ground. Some in particular who did very well because of their involvement w/ Duke are: John Agar, Jeffrey Hunter, Robert Carradine and last but certainly not least--Harry "Dobe" & "Brick" Carey Jr.

I know at least one of the youths who was in The Cowboys (I can't think of his name ff-hand) was a Child Rodeo Star-and he was a perfect choice to be in that movie. Currently he STILL is a Rodeo Star-having given up on hollywoodland because of the ifighing and back-stabbing that e saw going on behind the scenes and wanted nothing more to do with it. This guy had the potential of becoming a major TV &Movie Star-but he had the guts enough to leave that behind.

I like Mr. Nightlinger in "The Cowboys." Going into the movie, you knew that John Wayne was going to carry it, but Mr. Nightlinger gave it depth I believe. It was a side of the old west that is not shown, and for the time "The Cowboys" was released, the concept was a bit ahead of its time.

I agree w/ ya, Roscoe Lee Brown was great as Mr. Nightlinger. Sadly, he passed away within the past few years. I always did like the sound of his voice.

Couldn't agree with you more about both these great actors. Also, part of what makes Duke still so popular even having passed away near 30 years ago, is just as you said-about Duke reinventing himself as he made more movies. Speaking of Duke, im about to order on Netflix, a copy of his movies: His Private Secretary and Reunion in France. I haven't seen either of these yet-but will get to soon ;-)) Another i've never seen but want to-is one of his mid to late 1930's pictures-called: I Cover the War.

This thread is getting to be pretty long in duration. Does anyone keep up with the longest running threads, most popular, etc?
