Oh no, you mentioned merchant ship....Now see Stefan? The simplicity is starting to fade.. Merchnat ships do not fly the Union Jack actually neither do warships unless as a recogniton aid with huge ones on side of ships to stop friendly fire.. Merchant marine fly the red duster, the navy the red ensign, the UK flies the Union flag, the welsh a drgon, the Scots the Irish and the Scots their own too..The English fly the Cross of St. George..and S
Anyone else have that problem..press space and the post flies off before finishing...must get this fold up keyboard fixed...
Urqh, its still simple, if it is flown from a ship it is the union jack, the rest obviously have different names but a flag is only a jack if it is on a ship. Don't worry Bill, no one ever uses the right names so it doesnt make much difference.
To be honest Stefan, I cant think of any occasions I have seen a union jack flying from a warship...I must be wrong something in my memory is telling me Ive seen em on em but cant say I have. Im not a sailor by any means, got a canoe...but when would a Union Jack be flown on a warship? It wouldnt be flown instead of the ensign surely?
Of course your right Stefan, flown at the Bowsprit apparantly, now Iknow I have seen it in port on ships of the Royal...I admit it...so dont go posting 28 frigates and destroyers..I concede mate... http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page398.asp
Urqh, actually I was thinking that the Jack would first have been flown from a ship before the development of the 'colours' system for admirals (there were three squadrons that form a higherachy, an admiral could be admiral of either red, white or blue (I think that is the order of seniority) and ships under his command would fly the appropriate coloured ensign). I was actually not suggesting that the union jack would ever be flown from a ship (I aint a sailor either so I have no idea how this all works) but the term 'jack' should only be applied to a flag flying from a ship, don't think it has to be a war ship come to think of it. Speaking of ships etc, today we were going through some stuff and found chunk of timber that my grandfather had when he was young. It was part of the HMS Victory that was removed from the vessel at the 1921 refit. A nice piece of history to put on a mantlepiece I think.
And you know... we bitch about a lot of the stuff we have to do to our books. And some of it is probably in most views excessive. But I keep comng back to it- who am I to tell parents in Texas what their kids should learn? And it does keep us on our toes, not doubt about that! I guess in a wierd way, we should thank Texas?!?!
Sorry it took me so long to get back here--first it was because the internet has been down here in CC since Saturday afternoon and then Libraries closed for Memorial Day. Not to worry Doc, i'd never go to war with my spicy neighbors to the South of my location I love their music--food and women too much for that.
Sorry for this extra post--my hand hit the wrong button. [ 27. May 2003, 02:10 PM: Message edited by: C.Evans ]
Sorry for the post interruption.... I agree with you Fried. I'm VERY surprised that this happened in this part of Texas. If they stupidly think that racist groups run rampant here (the kind they are singling out) then they have made a huge mistake in their poor judgements. Also, if they want to blame anything on Skinheads--we do not have skinhead problems here in CC-land--nor do we have any anit black or anti hispanic rallies here brought on by so-called nazis and kkk. There has not been a kkk incident of anykind in this area since BEFORE ww1. I've personally never heard of any so-called nazi rallies or troubles in this area either. Erich--speaking of Militaria Houses. Did you know that in the recent Tornado storms that Manions Ausction House--was destroyed? Though I have not made any purchases through them--I do feel sorry for the loss of such a place and fro all the things destroyed and lost forever there. I feel sorry for the owners of those items because some of them are probably short on money--and needed the money that the sell of their items would bring. Greg--your correct japan does not teach about what they did in ww2--like all the atrocities. They do tell about the USA dropping the A-bombs though--but not the reason why those bombs were dropped--they refuse to tell about their aggression in Manchuria--the mass murders--slavery--starvation--poverty and the 100,000s of chinese women and korean women-- FORCED into prostitution--just so japanese soldiers could have someone to relieve themselves with. Crazy--I'll not bark but, Peppy might. I completely agree with you. Bill--I completely agree with you as well. Several years ago--when I still lived in my small hometown of Kingsville, Texas--I used to fly three flags from a pole in my front yard. The three flage from highest to lowest were: The Stars and Stripes. The Confederate battleflag. The Union Jack. My neighbors thought it was cool to fly all the flags--especially the Confederate battleflag and Union Jack. Well--one day a group of jehovahs witnesses stopped by my house (I was relaxing in a wicker chair on the porch--drinking sun tea) and 8 of them got out of their van--and without my permission--stepped onto MY land--with the three oldest "elders" walking up to my porch--two went to my flagpole and started lowing all my colors and three others stood in my yard and on my sidewalk. They came up to me and said I had no right to fly those flags and that the Rebel and jack flags were being taken off my flagpole. I said they had better get their dirty non-believing hands off my flags or I would chase them from my yard with a loaded gun. The two continued to lower my flags--I stepped in the door and had my Mauser 98-K in my hands (not loaded, but then--they had no way to know either way) I walked past the three "elders" went to my flagpole--pushed the first wierdo out of the way and then pushed the second one into the street and said I would use this (my weapon) to keep them out of my yard--that I was also calling the police because of their invasion of my property, and that he was lucky I didn't break his beak for taking my flags down. I then re-raised my flags--went inside and called the cops. The jehovahs quickly left. The police arrived as well as a Sheriffs Deputy. I told them what happened and said if they enter my yard again and aren't invited--that I would use the necessary force to keep em off my land. None of the police nor the Deputy, had any problems of anykind in my defending my land--but made sure that if I were to "hurt" someone--they they have to be in my house--to which I said--no problem--i'll drag them into my house before you arrive. Well--I left the flags up--and never had problems with those J.witness's again. In those days and in Kingsville--one did have a right to defend ones property with firearms--and were not given a seconds thought by the police that one was out to be a menace to society--today--that is not the case--unfortunately. Urgh--Texas actually has had 6 flags flown. Spanish, French, Mexican, Texan, Confederate, and the USA flags. ((Oops sorry PzJgr--I didn't notice you had posted them) Thank you for clearing the Union flag up for me as well Stefan. From now on it's Union Flag.
Just read through this whole thread. Very interesting. I could fly up to 8 County and National flags. (if I could get that many flagpoles in the yard!!) Bill, I could send you a Manx Flag if you want. (How do I insert an image here?) That would confuse your neighbour [ 27. May 2003, 02:12 PM: Message edited by: KmPok ]
OK, Urgh, point taken. Also, Stefan, and I know we are way off topic now, the Merchant Navy flies the white ensign, the red ensign, (or red duster) is used solely by the Royal Navy.
Kmpok, it was me not Stefan that said Red Duster is the merchant marine flag. Think you'll find its been that way since the 1860's. Think the posts have been a bit confusing. Think you should get a good pic of the manx flag up on here....Then though you will have to related the story... Interesting that, didnt the Isle of Man have an internment camp for enemy aliens in ww2?
KmPok, since I caused half the confusion I supose I better put some links up... Nice Manx flag there too mate. http://tmg110.tripod.com/british2.htm http://www.red-duster.co.uk/ http://www.iomguide.com/manxflags.php
Sorry, Urgh. It has been one of those days. Thanks for the links. How do I post an Image on here? I have a piccy of the 'Three Legs' all ready to go. [ 27. May 2003, 03:09 PM: Message edited by: KmPok ]
Sorry for the misuderstanding, Carl, those JW's can be pesky, they keep turning up at my door, well they did until they turned up when me, my father and brothers were sorting our re-enacting gear and they were met at the door by 2 SS grenadiers and a red army frontovik
So Stefan, the postman has a registered letter to deliver on a Saturday morning... And the Waffen SS open the door... Seriously though, if you get ready at home and then leave....how do the neighbours react? Are they close neighbours so know what you do and interested....or are they offish?
The case with the JW's was not accidental, we saw who they were and pulled on either a tunic or a cap to see how they reacted. Don't worry, we are not irresponsible enough to scare off our postman, who would deliver our newsletter? Normally before events my father will wear civilian clothes (so that he can fuel up the car at a petrol station if necessary, hob nail boots are not a good thing to be walking around in as they make sparks) whilst my brother and I wear our trousers, shirts and boots, we keep all insignia bearing uniform items off until we arrive. That isn't to say that we don't look odd loading the car (not many people wear thick wool trousers, hobnail boots and gaiters) but at least they won't know what the uniform is. The other thing is that we normally leave very early in the morning so few people see us walking around. Often a chap who lives near by comes with us, he tends to wear his camoflague uniform, he is a biker though so riding around in a fantastically authentic looking panzer wrap doesn't look too strange. Actually, being based in north London if we get any attention it is all too easy to look back as though we are the normal ones, if you see what I mean.
