Above: The picture on the left first appeared in the United States in 1933 and was widely printed in newspapers. It was represented as being a picture of Adolf Hitler as a baby. It caused such a sensation that the German consul eventually felt obligated to denounce it as a 'fabrication.' Sometime in 1937 Mrs. Harriet M.W. Downs, of Westport, Conn., noticed the picture in a magazine and recognized the infant as her own son, John May Warren (who by then was eight years-old and didn't resemble Hitler at all). The original picture of her son is shown above on the right. An unknown hoaxer had retouched the image to remove the frilly bonnet and darken the baby's eyes.
