MARTHA STEWART ON TRIAL!! YES!!!!! I have always HATED that woman for her cleaness, her prissiness, for her if-you don't-do-it-my-way-your-wrong attitude, and just all around fake behavior. But, in any instance, here you are, another of my brilliantly crafted posts that gets nothing acomplished.

    Ta, you said it...

But I am glad they "finally" do 'something' about corporate greed. It is scary that CEO's can get away with ransacking companies for 100's of millions of $$$ and leave the employees unemployed without their 401(k), and screw the shareholders. And that politics often choose to do nothing about it; campaign-donations, you see... :barf:

I suggest anyone interested in this aspect of economics/politics read Arianna Huffington's Pigs At The Trough

    http://www.ariannaonline.com/pigs/index.html

It isn't even about my own country but it got me angry!

I understand she has her critics (as she is one herself) but she come recommanded by Bill Maher, so that's good enough for me... ;)

Another good book, less confrontational, but an EXCELLENT background to Huffington's book is The Power Game: How Washington Works by Henrick Smith, a pulitzer Prize winning journalist.

The Gordon Gekko's are still here!

I'm sure she deserves what she will get but--I don't think she should be put behind bars--or for very long. That is part of the reason why there is so much over crowding in prisons here in the states. People who can contribute more by "doing time" doing Community Services and volunteering--than by being behind bars.

Now if she had caused someones death--or killed them herself--then I think she should be put behind bars.

I think that it will be punishment enough for her to have all this negative attention--also resigning as chair of her corporation--probably also shutting down her magazine and TV show--let alone losing most of her friends. And then you can filter in the fines she will ultimately have to pay--however much that will be?

She was valued at having at least $1 BILLION Dollars and assets. Now I think she is a mere multi multh multi Millionnaire with money and assets of a mere $200 MILLION or so.

In the end though--that's what you get for being greedy.

Just my two cents worth. [IMG]

I see your point Carl, but why should she not she the grevious errors of her ways? I think that prison would be a good thing for her, might knock some of that high and mightiness out of her.

Personally, I couldn't care less what happens to Martha... Guess she'll make a good "example"... but corporate fraud is kind of like computer crime- the criminals are always 2 steps ahead of the cops. Surely, every now and then we get examples like Kenneth Lay (Enron, right?), Martha Steward, etc. (like Kevin Mitnick in the world of computer crime)- but do these examples really have any effect on the next CEO? I wonder... they seem to "never learn"... always thinking that someone else will be the one that gets caught.
    Ahh, who knows...

But... along the lines of this thread-

That is a VERY VERY good point. Our jail system is horrendously overcrowded from what I understand, and many of the people doing "hard time" are in there for some kind of stupid reason. More emphasis could put some of those people to work helping others, as opposed to simply costing the taxpayers money.

How about Martha Stewart gets 1000 hours of community service... cleaning up some slums!!!
Should be right up her alley... no pun intended.

Hi Buff--I think she will learn her lesson by being made to do community service. It would not gain a thing to put someone like her in a prison. Believe me--I know--I used to work at some for the State of Texas and I did see (in my opinion) more than a few who should not have been in prison and I did see many many who deserved what they got.

I think that Martha S, is one who is being made an example of--and i'm sure she deserves whats coming to her but--I cannot see her being put into prison for that unless she goes to Federal prison.

Now--if she goes to Federal prison--then I have no problems with that because everyone knows that Federal prison is a CAKE-WALK--compared to doing time for the state.

If she were to go to state prison--it would not teach her a thing and state prison is much harder than Federal.

No matter how one looks at doing time--it flat out sucks--no matter where you do it.

    Martha Stewart.

She made her riches by having a TV show that teaches you how to cook, clean house, decorate house, gardening and alot of other stuff.

She also has some magazine out that she publishes.

She got into serious trouble because she had some serious amount of stock and found out (insider trading) that certain stock she had was going to be worth zilch so she got rid of it.

She could spend a few years running a community kitchen! That would be perfect!

That would be a great idea!!!!!!! At least the people unfortunate enough to have to go to them--could get chef quality cooking for a change. [IMG]

And actually I have heard that the cooking in those Soup Kitchens really isn't that bad.
