“So, the Spirit exhales where it wants. It's blown on me.”

“The Church of silence doesn't exist anymore. Now it speaks through my voice.”

“Open all doors to Christ…! Open the far corners of the States, economic systems, the political… Do not fear!”

John Paul II, spiritual leader of 1,2 billion people, one of the most influential figures of the XX Century and top moral leaders of the world, is dead. May he rest in peace.

"Faithfuls prays at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City, 02 April 2005, moments after the death of Pope John Paul II was announced."

I was overwhelmed, so many people there...

Now we'll have to prepare for the conclave and see who will be Saint Peter's new successor.

There's some controversy as if the new Pope should be an old cardinal or a young one, if a transition or a long revolutionary papacy would take place.

It too will be very important if the new Pope is Italian again, European or from the Third World.

It might be good if the new Pope was from the Third world but I don´t know if the Catholic world is ready for it??

I'd put my money on some Latin American cardinal, since half of the Catholics live in Latin America.

As long it is not cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, archbishop of Lima:

He's a member of the Opus Dei!

Joseph Ratzinger (who was a WWII FLAK veteran, by the way)?

He's one of the most powerful and 'papable' cardinals. He led the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (the modern Holy Inquisition) and was Dean of the College of Cardinals.

Here's a link to meet one of the most papabile cardinals, one with many enemies and an arch-conservative, but a though and decided leader: Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Thanks for the link Fried, I just read the article, here is a quote about midway through:

A theological liberal of sorts in his youth, Ratzinger was later nicknamed the "Panzerkardinal" for his iron hand in bringing Marxist priests in Latin America and clerics with mushy views on sexual ethics to heel.

His nickname is the Panzerkardinal! How can he not suceed a Polish Pope?

I was very sad indeed to hear of the passing of Pope John Paul II. He was a fantastic Pope, and one that shall be sorely missed.

My vote for the new Pontiff, would have to go to either Cardinal Arinze, or Cardinal Ratzinger.
