No, U 47 has not been found. And there is very little information as to specific location U 47 sank.

The "official" story is that U 47 was sunk by HMS Wolverine during the night of 7-8 March 1941. But further research has shown that Wolverine most likely depthcharged the u-boat U A. U 47 was lost by an unknown cause.

None of the British ASW attacks can account for the loss. A drifting mine could be the cause of the sinking. Mines were seen drifting in the area. But the loss was probably due to an accident. U 47 was on old boat and had undergone a refit in Lorient. From that refit, a new diving restriction had been placed on the boat. It is possible that during the attack on OB 293, Prien dove the boat at a significant angle and at speed and went past this new safe depth and was crushed. Another possiblity was that an error during the diving procedure was made by a younger member of the crew which caused the loss.

There is another stranger rumor as to the fate of U 47 that circulated during the war and then resurfaced after the war. The story goes that Prien and his crew mutinied and had been sent to a labor camp on the Russian Front. After the war, other versions had Prien and crew dying in a concentration camp, dying of starvation, and being shot by Allied troops when the camp was liberated. All of these stories are heresay and no foundational evidence can support any of these claims.
