Upon completion of basic at Camp Wolters, Fort Benning OCS was next; was assigned cadre at Fort Benning, then to Camp Howze. All I have is shoulder insignia for 11th Armored, which was deactivated in early 1945 in Germany, yet have him shipping from Camp Adair for invasion of Japan, after V-E day. Was placed in Manila to convert supply ships for Magic Carpet rides. Told of bulldozing bales of Army blankets into the bay, being stripped of weapons although barracks were raided for food and supplies every night, and his co's refusal of volunteering for hill mop-up. My question--how do I determine what outfit he was assigned to for Japanese invasion? Have report of separation listing organization as "HQ CO AF WES PAC", and haven't had any luck; records in St. Louis fires. Appreciate any info, help, guidance, etc.

I wish I could help you with your search, but I'm on my on search. I'm interested in any info that you have on the 'Magic Carpet' rides. I'm trying to find out any info on my father-in-law and what ship he came home on.

Some of the others my be able to help you in obtaining records.

His orgainzation at time of seperation probably will have no bearing on the unit he actually served in. Units were often deactivated overseas and their personnel transferred to other units who were headed stateside. Since they were now carried on the new unit's rolls, they would be listed as being discharged from that unit. This is why you could see riflemen being discharged from artillery battalions and tankers from medical units and what not.
