Well, of course the moment comes to every plane that it´s time to change to another newer version. But I guess the hind was quite a successful one (?) and at least I will remember its profile form the films forever.

Only problem is, if you are planning to use it in the US the FAA will not certify Russian made helicopters as they are considered too unsafe for commercial or private flight use in the US.

A helicopter which can be destroyed by arrows should have been retired 20 years ago :p

Kerem. All helos are vulnerable to many things, you can't armor them like a tank. Their advantages lie in stealth and quick surgical strikes, not slugging it out with an enemy.

No arrow ever took down a Hind, a 50cal can with luck considering the Hind will off the gun very fast if the pilot has a chance to see it. The Hinds are very well armored and if I'm not mistaken have a very high survival rate against small arms. They were the most feared gunships in the world in their time and stopped the Israeli armored offensive on Damascus dead it its treads in the Golan in the 80s. They destroyed numerous vehicles with no losses of their own. The Afghan Mujahadeen simply ran or hid when one showed up, until they acquired stinger missiles from America.

South Africa is working on a modern version of the Hind itself and it is still in service with many countries in the world.

The US Army has one that they captured from Iraq in GW1. They may still use it for training purposes. The standards imposed by the government have merit but most of it is just protectionism and politics. There will be collectors looking to buy them though.

The chopper in that film was a French Puma with some mods slapped on it. Pretty good likeness though.

They were a smart design that combined both transport and attack into one machine. From what I read they worked really well in combat until those pesky stinger missles came along.

    Wrong, Rambo did.:p

I was just referring to a senseless scene from Rambo, I agree Mi-24 is a good helicopter.

They used a Hind in the movie called the Beast. It was about a Russian tank crew in Afiganistan. They also used it in a movie I can not think of the name of now. It was about Cubians invading Colorado and a group of teens called the Woverines fought them off with gurealla tactics.

The Midland Air museum has a Hind in Civvy colours that (If I recall) was used by British Aerospace for testing canopy materials, looks damned strange:

There were tales from Afghanistan of Hinds being downed by well aimed Rifle fire at the rotor connection, I couldn't vouch for their veracity but the Mujahadeen were certainly crack shots with those old Enfields.

    Cheers,
    Adam.
