I did q quick search, and couldn't find anywhere where this site has been mentioned. OSS Society Website As I'm sure most of you are aware, the Office of Strategic Services, headed up by 'Wild Bill' Donovan, was established during World War II to collect intelligence, organize resistance and was the American equivalent of the British SOE, as well as being the forerunner to the modern day CIA. They were spies. If you look over on the left hand and click on Newsletter Archive, it will take you to a list of their quarterly newsletters, available to download as PDFs. I've been browsing through them, and each one contains at least one real interesting World War II related article - ie on a Jedburgh reunion, an obituary for the TV chef Julia Child (who was an OSS operative in WWII!), the rescue of a downed AVG pilot that escaped from Japanese captivity in Thailand, a description of Marlene Dietrich's OSS activity (yep - she was a spy, too!). Pretty fascinating stuff. Apologies if this link has already been posted, but I couldn't find any references to it on the forum. -whatever -Lou
Thank you. This gives me another source of information. Now I need to find somewhere other than the Bletchley and Camp X websites for SOE information. Michelle
excellent website, scarface...I have read little about OSS operations. One little book on their ops in Holland during Market Garden. In 1985 I met this guy here in Amsterdam (we arranged to meet, we had corresponded before) who told me he was in the OSS during the war and jumped into Holland. I couldn't write down any notes, he would make a tape for me when he got back. Told me a few anecdotes....told me that after the war he was in the NSA....noticed his wife looked a bit uncomfortable. He gave me a card, which showed the Screaming Eagle (101st Abn Div). He said he belonged to their assoc. because he jumped in their area in Holland and worked with him..... Years later I found out that he wasn't is OSS, but was in Easy Co., 506th PIR, 101st Abn...He is also mentioned a few times in "Band of Brothers"...... Well now.....
