    Not me, yet.

This pic is not of myself but from a friend. This man has spent the entire week shouting at my ears (by email) for me to send him my resume in English.

THIS is where I want to be: 90m above ground, building things!

Location: Syria, 20km NE of Damascus! Where next? God only knows!

Provided they're not passing overhead it's alright. War is good for business, everytime the Israelis bomb something there has to be somebody to clear the rubble and reconstruct. Lots of money in it.

The Red Rabbi is mad at me. He says he doesn't want to go to a no-vodka place, and he doesn't want to convert to The Red Imam

But do they have innernet in Syria. And if so, aren't the WW2F not blocked off? I am sure that will be a big factor in your decision....

Besides that; Syria sounds like an interesting country. Lot of great archeology sites....

    Sent in that CV....

Stevin it's not that great of a place, Damascus is skuzzy dirty, the royal family of course lives like kings/queens while the commoners are treated like dogs. if anyone goes for a stay don't tell a soul, and keep your camera well hidden unless you travel far far away from the cities/villages. let me also add that I am basing this on my observance some eyars ago and that things could of changed ........ probably not

Erich, yes, I was not talking from a political PoV, I must admit. That leaves much to be desired. A buudy of mine went there with his girlfriend about 5 years ago and took local busses to the archeology sites. They said the people were really nice and if you could look at the busses and time-tables as "quaint", you could have a good/interesting time going to the sites....

I guess I have too much the late 19th Century "Archeology Adventure Boys" books in my head.... :)

I am always interested in out-of-the-way places, but one can take it too far, I guess. I am reading Robert Kaplan right now (Ends of the earth) and although it paints a pessimistic picture, I do get the feeling I'd like to go places like taht to see for myself, instead of yet another trip to Rhodes or Cyprus....But I am venturing OT now...

may I suggest Jaresh in Jordan for a wild view of Roman times stuck out in the middle of nowhere, I really wish I could pose photos of that trip some years back, as I was in-cog-nito. A well preserved roman site of antiquity, theaters houses, many columns along the by way roads..........the ever present vomitoriams, etc.

    ZA those names are familiar

Stevin if you go just avoid Hamas please......... there is some very interesting things of antiquity barely discernable out of the sand and only when the Jordanian govt. feels that it can make them some monies somehow will they facilitate a sand removal. if you did any background on Jaresh you would find the whole old city was completely buried in the sands of time and it was monumental effort by several nations to haul the many truckloads out of there. the new village just sits outside of the old citys limits

sorry for hoggin the thread Za

90 meters ? Not that high. It's like deep water, once you pass a certain number....more makes little difference. When walking around up there, keep your hands out of your pockets ! If you trip you'll not be able to get your hands out before you go over (to catch your fall). I know a guy who disobeyed this "rule", and broke his nose falling flat on his face. Because he could not extract his hands in time to break his fall. (Try it)...His brother is the one who informed me (many years ago). Along an edge....the problem is obviously more serious.
Adventure is calling, or at the least something different. The no alcohol thing bites. I'd double the expected pay for that.
As long as you have an "exit" strategy....why not ? It do depend on other restrictions/laws which apply directly to you...living there, and of course pay.
Most places don't give you a choice of color when "hard-hats" are concerned. It's a "Tag" (class system) denoting rank/trade/locater....whatever. Bulls-eye ? (kidding)
Keep your "Papers" handy, and your sun-block/sun-glasses.

Good point, TA......And here's a "What If" for you:

Your friend/employer: "No No No, Iraq is about 20 miles that way! That 3 meter high barbed wire fence to the west is an optical illusion. It is actually to the east! Honestly, would I sent you to work in Iraq and not tell you???? And besides, what is Iraq gonna do with a 90 meter high dome that could be mistaken for a nuclear plant, but isnt?"

Make sure the small print doesn't say something like "This company is a Subsidiary of Haliburton"
