She's a Soviet Kirov class heavy cruiser. With what I can see of the bridge structure, I'd say she is the Molotov.
Nice work! distinguishing Molotov from her sisters is not easy. (And I will not go into an argument about wheter the Project 26 were heavy or light cruisers ).
I hate to jump in again, but I also hate to see the thread idle. I have one ready if TOS is off for a while. Thoughts? Anyone else want to cut in?
Takao got my Molotov so I believe it's his turn. As far as I'm concerned go ahead .... especially if you have a good one !.
No Steve McQueen ? USS Panay? Not that many gunboats with two funnels that I know of and they look too close together for Luzon/Mindanao or Monocacy/Palos. BTW very nice picture.
Indeed. Panay she is. Sorry I'm missing something with the McQueen reference. You might have to PM me and explain.
A bit too big for a Grimsby though not really cruiser sized, think around 2000t. She was sunk by a task force that included a Leander class cruiser.
I admit my red herring was a bit nasty so .... the action I was referring to took place in 1961, this should make it a lot easier to track down, not that many Leander still around at the time !!. The Leander was present but AFAIK didn't fire at her.
NRP Afonso de Albuquerque is correct. I picked her up leafing through a 1943 naval almanac, then, as she was proving difficult to track, I wondered if she was mentioned on the net and found this very interenting story. NRP Afonso de Albuquerque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Vijay_(1961) So when a Leander was mentioned I couldn't resist murking up the waters with a reference to INS Delhi/HMNZS Achilles. Your go.
