Carl-Albrecht Oberg's Family

    Most of you must be familiar with the 'Butcher of Paris', Carl-Albrecht Oberg.

    Unfortunately I happen to share the same last name with him, and as my family originates from Brunswick in Germany, (and there are not many Obergs in Germany, mostly in sweden) I was hoping someone had information on his direct family, as I would like to reassure myself that we are NOT related :) A family tree, or some kind of record perhaps?

    Its been 3 days, anyone? Any clue at all as to where I could even begin looking for this sort of information? :confused:

    I wouldn't have a clue, as I know very little on genealogical research in Europe.

    Start by talking to older members of your family and see what they can tell you about where your family may have lived in the past. Ask to look at old pictures and inquire about people in the pics for names. Contact distant family members and ask questions of them.

    Google "European Genealogy" or other combinations. I did and found several sites to start with. Sign up on any bulletin board you may find relevant to European genealogy in the areas you are looking for. I was able to prove Creek Indian ancestry by posting a name on bulletin board one time that someone recognized and then pointed me to a record in another state.

    The more you look, the more you will find, so start hitting genealogical sites and they will point you where you need to go.

    Bear in mind, political boundaries change. If an ancestor has records in one area, his name may not be found in an area of the same name. We looked for years for an ancestor's estate settlement (for people who die without a will) who settled in Conecuh County Alabama and died on the land he homesteaded. We finally found the settlement in another county. He didn't move, the county line moved!

    The only thing I can tell you Michelle, is waht I did to research my family name. I googled my name and then found a genealogy site that actually listed my family all the way back to 1862. That's where I am stuck right now! So maybe you can try the same if you haven't already! Anyway, good luck!!

    Well the thing is, I do in fact have my family's records dating back until the late 15th century, However, when the family split and a majority moved to Missouri in the States the remainder in Germany was not taken into account by the records. That is why finding Carl-Albrecht's records would allow me to find out if they tie in or not around 1840-1860! And these records I cannot just 'find' easily.
