I was playing Red Orchestra the other night ( an ww2 eastern front game) and was overcome with the shear awe and power of the Tiger that and its all conquering 8.8cm kwk. I was just interested if any one knew of a good yarn or story about any series of Tiger in the front line. Information on this topic is priceless to me as self-professed experts whom I know regard the Tiger as a farce and tell me to find stories on T-34s and IS tanks. I find this to be ignorant and would appreciate some feedback on any stories you may know of or overheard. Thank you
Search through any of the several 'Tiger' threads on this Forum and you'll come across a fair few stories plus some good discussions. For sure, the Tiger story has been overblown during and after the war but it was no 'farce' - the Tiger was justly feared by its opponents. One of the best-known and much-debated Tiger stories has to be that of Michael Wittmann at Villers-Bocage ; again, it didn't quite happen as portrayed by German propaganda and post-war by over-admiring 'historians' but even so, a remarkable achievement.....
I have read two books that give a pretty interesting view of German tank warfare. "Panzer Aces" by Franz Kurouski has different panzer commanders' accounts of battle in different types of tanks: Tiger, Panther, PzkIII and IV, JagdPanther. Just remember that it was written by Germas for Germans. "Tigers in the Mud" by Otto Carius chronicles his career as a tank commander. I find it interesting that he thinks little of the U.S. soldier. http://www.amazon.com/Panzer-Aces-Franz-Kurowski/dp/0345448847 http://www.amazon.com/Tigers-Mud-Co...729117/ref=pd_sim_b_5_img/104-9551387-4893523 tom
