I joined a wee while ago then my pc turned turtle, just got back online. I have always been interested in Military history especially the two WW, and grew up listening to my late dad's stories. Two of my late uncles were in the Seaforth Highlanders, another one was chief engineer in the merchant fleet and survived getting torpedoed twice. My dad worked in the Greenock shipyards then went round all the RAF bases in the UK bulding hangers, accommodation buildings etc. He also watched Greenock being blitzed and said when the whiskey distilleries went up it was a sight to see. My mum was coming home by train from Glasgow when nearing Port Glasgow a raid started over the River Clyde, a german plane shot at the train which the driver had the good sense to halt inside two tunnels that were close together. Well I guess thats all. cruachan
This site is run by extremely informed and helpful chaps, which has an unusual mixture of totally brilliant stuff and occasional utter shite. Which is why I really enjoy it. Hope you do to.
Hi everyone I'm sorryI don't know what bn my uncles were in, but if it's any help I think my father told me they had been to Bergen Belsen. Everyone I could have asked has sadly passed over, when growing up it was mentioned briefly that they went to one of the camps but they never talked about it. Then when you get older and your interest really develops those you could ask are no longer with us, so thank goodness for those who wrote their memoirs and experiences so that we must not forget. I have been in England 20 years now and I still feel like a tourist! My sister has lived in the States for 30 years and still misses all the wee things that you get at " home " in Scotland!
Hi Cruachan it's good to have a descendant of the mighty Picts on the forum! I hope we"ll share some nice talks.
Thanks I don't know about the mighty Picts, I think I'd be one of the midget ones! My surname is one of the Scottish gaelic names for Oak and it seems to fall under the Macdonald clan which has some really nice tartans, and it must be in the blood too that I like pipeband music! Regards Cruachan
Thanks all for the lovely welcome, I have enjoyed reading the threads and a lot has answered some of the things I wanted to know. I hope if I ask a question that's already on here, but doesn't come up in a search to tell me so, you won't shoot me down in flames but point me in the right direction. Thanks so much!
