He was killed/assassinated in 1942 by one of his own countrymen.

    According to Wiki, he
"... was unpopular with the Allies--he was considered pompous, having asked Eisenhower to provide 200 Coldstream Guards and Grenadier Guards as an honor company for the commemoration of Napoleon's victory at Austerlitz--and it was said that 'no tears were shed' at his funeral."
Well.... there you go.... a vitual 'gimme'...

Well, I knew he wasn't British, German or Italian. I never even thought about French. Apologies to Skipper.

Looks like Gen. Harold Alexander. If so, he commanded in North Africa and Italy.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a commission as 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps, fought in the Pacific, and retired as a Lt. General.

He's on the far right in the first photo, a Brig. General on Guam.

    Mike's up.

As commander of the 11th Marines (artillery) on Guadalcanal, Col. Del Valle's guns were instrumental in helping defeat several large Japanese attacks, the battles of the Tenaru River and Edson's Ridge included.
So impressed was Maj. Gen. Vandegrift, commander of Cactus forces, that he recommended Del Valle for flag rank. Del Valle was promoted to brig. general that fall.

I found an interesting website titled 'Generals of World War 2', that lists the generals and a bit of biography and, occasionally, a photo.

I was shocked to see that China had 1280 generals during WWII.

I started to list off the number of WWII generals for each of the (major) Allies and Axis, and found some interesting numbers.

    ALLIES..............# Generals

    Great Britain..........2623
    USA.....................1679
    China...................1280
    France.................1007
    Australia................236
    Canada..................219
    Belgium..................112
    New Zealand............78

    SOVIET UNION ......5575

    AXIS

    Japan...................1627
    Italy.....................1183
    Germany.................258

The figure of 258 for Germany really surprised me with respect to the numbers from the other warring states. Can anybody back these numbers up from a different source?
