If you could remake a WWII movie, what would that film be?

The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum was stalking a German sub, sir. I understand that adding today's production values and special effects might improve it but personally, I like it the way it is.

I would like to make several films:

    1. One relating to the siege of Leningrad.
    2. One in the Hurtgen Forest campaign.
    3. One about the German occupation of France and/or another occupied country.
    4. The blitz, and the struggle of the British people during 1940 in France (leading up to and including Dunkirk) and the German raids afterwards on British cities.
    5. Not WWII, but a film about the Easter Rising in Ireland during 1916.

Hi Swashbuckler, welcome to the site and, your wish has already been granted on your third choice. The movie is: D-Day: The 6th of June w/ Robert Taylor. However, IMO, this film sucked Prune Pits.

I would recreate Patton or The Longest Day. Both are good films i love but if the technology we have today I think we could make both of the movies amazing looking.

This early, I've seen that there's a consensus on the Longest Day and the Battle of the Bulge, Midway, and probably Enemy at the Gate. Most of us seem to prefer updating the said movie's production values or story. Now I pose this question: who should be cast as the actors in our hypothetical remake?

SANDS OF IWO JIMA!?!? Oh man.. that's almost sacrilege in my line of work.. :)

I'd remake Pearl Harbor.. to include getting rid of all the nancy-boys.. and probably trying to do a quick bit in it about the Marines on Wake Island.

By the way, any WWII movie where Chuck Norris is the Allied commander, and Dolph Lundgren is the German Commander would be entertaining for sure! We'll throw Jack Palance and Robert Deniro in there for good measure.

NOTE - I said "Entertaining" not necessarily super true. I mean.. just think.. Dolph Lundgren, evil Luftwaffe Stuka commander with a monacle and a hook for a hand... maybe even a wooden leg.

A quick one-edit out the "love story" in Midway, along with the pre occupation of the director with burning pilots. Replace Charlton Heston with John Wayne.

A different take-instead of allowing Pearl Harbor to be made, shift resources-rewrite-we need a movie about the Battle of Leyte Gulf. No big name actors, and like Tora Tora Tora, tell the story from both sides and lots of unknown actors ( to prevent hamming it up), and plotlines including:

    Life on a jeep carrier
    Life on a US battleship
    Japanese plotting
    US plotting

Also, we need a movie about the true life exploits of USS Tang.

    Dunkirk
    Bismarck“s end
    Nachtjagd
    Zitadelle
    Fleeing from East Prussia 1945

Just some that come to my mind...

Like your idea with making a movie of the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the manner of Tora Tora Tora or Longest Day.
However, replacing Charlton Heston with John Wayne in Midway ... hmmm... that's a hard call for me to make. I agree with you that the love story angle should be minimized. I think the intention of that subplot was to portray the problem faced by Japanese Americans. If so, there should have been a better way of presenting the situation.

Wouldn't mind watching a movie that shows the German conquest of Norway.

Mainly due to the German paratroopers involved and the scenic shots in Norway - a beautiful country.

BTW, has anyone ever seen or heard of a ww2 movie were the Germans won?

    Regards

    Hello Kai-Petri,

Yes sure computers. What about the real history - you know - Poland, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium and so on.

Would it be considered to be blasphemy ?

    Regards
    Kruska

    BRAVO!!!
I cant stand that movie, it should be banned on pain of death and dismemberment, all copies picked up and burnt, and the ashes mixed with concrete, and sunk to the bottom of the sea.

Couldn't agree more about Leyte Gulf. I would love to see a cinematic depiction of Taffy 3's stand against Kurita's "Center Force".
