Today's photo:

Location: Somewhere near Villers-Bocage, Normandy
Date: June, 1944
Subject: A squad from the British Green Howards takes cover from sniper fire in the hedgerows.

 

Notice the Anti-Personnel Bombs still barely hanging.

they should detach those ASAP

 

I think this is an Italian paratrooper. (smock) Note how all the italian paras have the luxury SMG.

 

come to think of it, the barrels on those italian SMGs are very long..

 

but when were Italian Paras ever really used "en masse"?

 

the italian Berretta SMG ,with its heat absorbing stock, was probably one of the best in the war and was far too expensive for real mass production. This weapon, the MP-41/MP-28, and the Chester( ?) were the luxury SMGs.

 

I think the fire was more of a priority at the time. IIRC This was at a airstrip in France.
