Well the helmet decals for one and the shoulder staps for another. Like it was mentioned before the Pickelhaube was replaced by the Stahlhelm in 1916.

So the conclusion is that the German Army was more 'Green' than the US Army...things don't change much....

    Poor beasts!

I am reminded of a passage in All Quiet on the Western Front in which a farmer soldier became beside himself with rage and indignance when he saw what was left of a horse shredded by artillery fire and has still alive enough to scream and ran wildy. He cursed and shot the horse himself, telling his comrades that "it is uncivilized, shameful and inhumane that we fight wars with horses". The irony, of course, is that it sure isn't more civilized to fight with human beings.

On a military note, I have heard much of the German artillery units lacked of mobility due to dependence on muscle rather than motor power. But field Howitzers are a huge guns and I don't see how that can be done without a tractor. Are those supposed to mean that the Germans did have gun-towing vehicles but their ammo and instruments were still dependent on by horsewagons? Or they just dragged all of their guns with horses too?

The Heavy Artilley was horse drawn also. From the beginning of the war till the end a large percentage of the German Artillery was horse drawn. Towards the end even more so as the German military became less and less mechanized.

I don't think we should go down too hard on the German horses in WW2, even the Americans where short on motor transport...oh, wait...carry on.
