Hi, I'm Matt. Just signed up. I registered here because I've always had an interest in WWII. Both of my grandfathers served in the war; my mother's father Archie S. Hughes was a mechanic in the USAF based in Queensland, Australia, working mainly on B-25's. My father's father, Jack Skinner, saw active duty in the Royal Navy aboard the Ack-Ack class cruiser HMS Dido which saw most of their action in the Mediterranean. My grandfather Jack wrote a book about his time in the war, entitled "A Ship, A Crew of WWII". As far as I know it is still available for purchase. I have many many original photos of his experiences in the war which he handed down to me over the years. One in particular which I think is extremely rare and original; a photo of Field Marshall Rommel overlooking the German fleet in Lybia. My grandfather acquired it after they took German pow's aboard their ship. My main reason for signing up was to find a way to share all these amazing photographs handed down to me without people trying to make money off me. After creating a website for my grandfather's book, I had a lot of people emailing me asking me if I could send them high resolution scans of the photos. I assumed it was so they could profit off them. If anyone has any advice for me, please feel free to comment. Thank you, Matt Skinner
hi matt welcome aboard a great place here you will enjoy your stay .. we all love .pics . here the more the better cheers krieg
G'day back mate, I am assuming Austrlian based on the name of the thread? I would love to see the picture, Rommel has always fasinated me, so post away. oh and welcome
Matt -- Welcome! You will enjoy your time here; I am sure! Do you still have your website up? If so you can post the link here for us to see the photos. We will be appreciative and we will not be mercenary! Cheers!
Welcome, Matt. I look forward to your postings - stories and/or photos. Many of us have posted photos or documents here. I hope you enjoy the Forum.
Thanks for everyones welcomes/replies. Yes, I'm an Aussie living in Australia. As far as I know the website is still up but is in dire need of an update. I'll see if I can find the url. I'll get onto scanning, watermarking, and posting some photos as soon as I find the time. Just found another gem last night while going through another box I found...a photo of the original telegraph (telegram?) from London to my Grandfather's ship ordering them to "commence hostilities at once with Germany", the only inscription on the back of the photograph reading "The beginning of it all..." I have so many more photos to go through. I'm sure I'll happen upon many more rare ones. Cheers everyone, Matt
By all means, post this one when you get the opportunity. I am sure that there are those out there who do want to sell your pics and make a profit. I like looking at the big pics because of the detail in them. I can see so much minutae in the background or edges that is interesting. Welcome to the forum.
you can start up an individual thread under your own choosing and then as we make remarks you can comment on them.........how does that sound ? Realize that even with a special trademark sig-watermark things can be omitted and copied, that is just the way of the internet and for those lousies that feel everything is free on the internet well ........... this is something we just take chances on doing, again many of us have posted pics including myself from our own personal collections some of them are very rare indeed. we are all friends here...........post away and welcome ! Erich ~
I've uploaded the photos I prepared this morning. Not sure if I did it right. I didn't know which forum section to put them in so I just put them in my album. http://www.ww2f.com/members/mskinner-albums-hms-dido-rommel.html
Thanks for sharing the photos. It is always special to see the photos of those who were there, especially when they are shared by a family member.
Hello , welcome on this fine forum. I notice you have already met some of the roques and had an opportunity to share documents with them. Thank you for this!
