Small, green, British accent, could save 15%... Ooops, wrong Gecko, but it is the J1N Gekko aka "Irving". You're up.
The one you have shown is the nightfighter version or J1N1-C Kai. Note the small search light in the nose and the lack of step behind the cockpit. The two open panels allowed access to the Japanese equivalent of a schrage musik upward firing pair of 20mm cannon. Normally no forward firing armament was fitted.
The information I have is that 53-85 was a J1N1-Sa. It was captured at Clark Field in the Philippines. The J1N1-C-Kai was a field modification of the J1N1-C in which upward and downward firing cannon were fitted in the cockpit area normally occupied by the third crew member. The three-views I've seen of the C-Kai show the extended cockpit with the installed guns. On this aircraft the extended cockpit is deleted. The C-Kai should have the fuselage step, as it was deleted on the -S version along with the extended cockpit. The -S was the production night fighter with upward and downward firing cannon. The -Sa deleted the downward firing cannons.
Sorry if it's already been done (there are a lot of pages), but here is one I hope to see in 2 weeks.
After 2 months, I doubt TAG will jump back in with a new entry - why don't you take it and run with it, Gromit. Throw one up there, Grom! -whatever -Lou
Just a question, but I thought the P-61 was designed to be a night fighter? From the pic I would say not all of them were. The one you are going to see, is it a nightfighter version? I hope to take a ton of pictures.
They were all nightfighters. The USAAF in it's infinite wisdom painted the P-61A's olive drab. Now then!
Ok that was too fast. It's either been posted before, or TOS has an unhealthy fascination with Italian aircraft, lol. Your turn TOS.
Your second guess is right on the mark, but I've had "the bug" for over forty years now with no apparent side effects . Next one View attachment 12059
