Did American paratroopers carry toothpaste in their gear? I've been trying to research online what all they carried, but so far no luck. Even though my book is fictional and historically inaccurate on many levels, I'm trying to get a few details right!
Consider trying reenactors they've a bottomless pit of collective knowledge: WWIIReenacting.co.uk Forums • Index page

ROLL, TOILET, Complete. This is a collective term for the soldier’s basic ablutions equipment. Every GI was issued a toothbrush, shaving brush and razor (with five blades), a comb, one bath and two huck towels. Different rolls based on civilian styles were sold at the PX, although the most effective was an olive drab 'tool roll' type bag. Toiletries were supposed to be carried in the haversack, although combat conditions could pare the contents down to the basics - just a toothbrush. Opportunities to clean occurred in a rest area. Original toiletries are still available but, like the underwear, we leave the decision to use these vintage items to the individual. For those that choose to – watch out for the nylon in the toothbrushes - it tends to harden with age and the tooth powder is very abrasive. The grit soap, happily, doesn’t smell too bad though! JC what ya doing raiding my rucksack,, Damm rebs cat trust em around your gear for a second i tell ya... Is that your stuff JC??
Don´t know if this applied to all US troops or just an individual case but in the document "the war" I mentioned earlier on soldiers in WW2 from four different US cities one told about the Ardennes campaign that he could not change his clothes for several months and did not brush his teeth for , was it 4-6 months. No shower either.
Thanks everyone....the information helps a lot, since if they did carry it, they would have tooth powder instead of paste.
