Yes the South American countries were involved in WWII-and Brazil was the major supplier of raw materials-and even sent an expeditionary force- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Expeditionary_Force_(FEB) and this is another movie that should be made-for the Allied cause. Huge supply fleets assembled and crossed the Atlantic with vital raw materials for the war effort and early on the U boat war raged in South American waters. The war was a tremendous boom and helped pull the SA economies out of the Depression. The area was something of a cockpit for Allied vs. Axis spies until 1943 when the Allies achieved a near complete victory in the covert game. Argentina alone remained "neutral"-and it was here that Hitler retained some influence. A repost of mine; My Grandfather's brother was involved in the American vs. Axis shadow war in South America. "How deeply and with what?" have been subjects of speculation within the family for generations now, but the fact is that given the time and place he would have to had to have been involved. The Uncle Frank stories I have heard over the years have been pretty wild; "Uncle Frank and his first wife escaping Argentina across the Bay of Uruguay a few steps ahead of the hit team-Peron confiscated his fortune but he made it back in Brazil, Uncle Frank having something to do with the placement of altitude bombs on German Airplanes, Uncle Frank shooting it out with Bandits outside of a Mexican Gold mine, Uncle Frank being the model for the Humphry Bogart charactor in 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre'", Uncle Frank bumping into Leon Trotsky at a hotel in Mexico... I sometimes wonder in these aren't all tall tales. What is certain is that the man had bullet stitching up his back (Dad), and that things about the covert world were not to be spoken of during Cousin Bernadette's visit there in 1946, and that there indeed seem to be people looking to kill him both then and again in Bernadette's second visit in the 1970s. I wrote the CIA asking for information on my Uncle Frank Grab-and recieved a reply that I needed his signature-rather hard as he passed away in 1991. So...I guess we will never know...but it is a fact that someone thought enough of Frank to pay his way for Mayo Clinic visits once a year for several years after the War.
