being a resident of Edinburgh, I frequently walk the dog and cycle in the pentland hills, but until I read an article on-line the other day, I'd no idea that there was a JU88 crash site so close to home that wasn't just a dent in the heather! Junkers Ju88A-14, werk no. 144357 coded 3E+HM of 11 / KG 6 crashed on Hare Hill in the Pentlands on the 25th March 1943. It had been on a bombing raid to Leith(Edinburgh docks) dropped its bombs on open fields and crashed, sadly all the crew were killed. Horst Bluhm Pilot Willi Euler Observer Fritz Forster w/op air gunner Heinz Kristall w/op air gunner After so long it was nice to see so much debris still lying around, the recent rain had washed some small bits & pieces from the hill, so I added those to the pile. I've stuck a note in my diary to visit again next March....
dear moderator, could you please delete this thread as I appear to have duplicated myself........... many thanks
Nice find Grim. I'll need to engineer an excuse to get over there myself. Three Spitfires from 58 OTU in Grangemouth crashed in the Ochils, as did a Liberator. I don't know if there's any wreckage left to see though. One of these days I'll get up there.
and Grim do you have bios on the LW crew and or photos of them ? not real sure if a book on KG 6 has been published or not ?? E ~
no further information at all, it was a throwaway line in an article about walking in the remote parts of the hills and nothing to do with a ww2, so i've no further info at the moment
Foerster details of the mission, and pictures of the pilot can be viewed on the above excellent website............ and they've added my pics too.......
Gordon, there is a memorial/pile'o'bits for the Ochils spitfires, this walk will take you to it...... Walking in the Ochils, Campsie Fells ... - Google Book Search
