Hello, I am an 17 year old boy and for quite some time I've been wondering about where my grandfather fought and/or how his division ended, or anything else I could dig up. I do have some information that could narrow down my search, however. - He was a paratrooper for the German Luftwaffe. - I believe his division fought in Italy, and I am quite certain Russia. It is quite unfortunate, but my Opa died in 1998 from Alzheimers. He also had Parkinsons, which he recieved from shrapnel never removed from his leg. There are no friends of his currently alive, and after the war, he did not much about it (when I was very young, at night he would be so paranoid that the Russians were looking for him, even though we were in Canada). Please if someone could just point me in the right direction, or explain to me how I could contact the German Military Records department, or just anything really. I've already analyzed his medals, and found most of them, with the exception of the one on his cuff.
Erich, you should be able to recognize some of these badges here? Could it be luftwaffe? I believe the 4th Para Div was in Italy, but I am not sure if they were in Russia.
So 3 years later and unfortunately I'm still in the same spot. Here's what I do know. He has a wounded badge from receiving shrapnel to his leg in Russia. Another Badge is the Paratrooper Badge. He was part of Radio Op What I am unable to identify is the 3rd Badge (the upper most one). I'm also very curious to know what that badge is on his cuff. I'm fairly certain he fought in Norway, and I know he fought in Russia. If anyone has any bit of information regarding either of the badges I cannot identify, or perhaps which possible divisions he could be part of, anything really. Google has only given me so much.
Coia--I believe the upper badge is a NSFK (National Socialist Flying Corps) Glider Badge. My book reads that the NSFK was a rather small and low profile organisation with about 2,400 men. The awards were not viewed with high regard with their recipients. Many went on to win much more prestigious Luftwaffe equivalents. About 2000 NSFK glider badges were bestowed.
From what I have been reading while searching, it appears that the primary German repository of military records was destroyed during Allied action in 1945.
