Man makes amends for stealing toy car during World War II The mayor of Abilene, Kansas, recently received an envelope that contained one letter and two $5 bills. City officials say the sender, a man who identified himself as "Bob," wrote in the letter that he was trying to make amends for a crime he committed during World War II: In either 1943 or 1944 I traveled thru Abelene, Kansas and went into a 5 & 10 cent store. While there I picked up a 35 cent toy car. I am not proud that I walked out of the store without paying for the toy and I have lived with this for well over 50 years. I wish to be forgiven for this action. I am enclosing $10 cover this costs. ... In the event that some of the owners are in the same family of owners I would like for the money to go to them. If not I would like for the $10.00 to go to a needy family that have children who could use a toy. "It's a cool story," City Manager Allen Dinkel tells The Abilene Reflector-Chronicle. Dinkel says they donated the money to the Toys for Tots program. "It makes you feel good about people again. People do have a conscience," he tells KMBC-TV. Damn fine man. Talk about a conscience - after all these years, he still couldn't live with it. What a fine example - it's never too late.
