Dear Forum I am researching my dad's WW2 records. He is 85yrs now and I would love to be able to fill in some gaps for him. Dad was a Gunnner in the Royal Artillery Maritime Regiment and was posted on the SS Marika Protopapa from 22 September 1941 to 18 June 1942 on the convoys and went from Hull to Canada, St Lucia, Bermuda, Brasil and the med amongst other places and left the ship at Port Said. The ship was a Greek registered ship (registered in Hydra) and it was originally a British ship before it was sold. Can anyone advise me where I can find out what happened to it after dad left it, i.e. did it see out the war and it's final fate. It would also be good to find out what it was called when it was a British ship. I would welcome any point in the right direction. Thanks Janny
Dear Janny: In first place, welcome to WW2F! In second....I search in a New Zealand's database of ships: 15 11367371915 MARIKA PROTOPAPA 4447 1933 V1915 #336 P.A.Protopapas http://www.miramarshipindex.org.nz/ship/show/167514 I hope that this ship are the merchant that you search.....Following the various links, you will learn more about of it. Jan.
Just a thought but maybe the Lloyd's Register of Shipping could some help or contact your local Merchant Navy association
Janny Have a look here - I haven't gone through the links in detail, but I think there may be some useful stuff here. "Marika Protopapa " - Google Search Good hunting Richie
Marika Protopapa was built in 1915 by W Gray & co LTD Sunderland 4447 Tons 393 ft long, 52 ft beam, 25 ft draft, servie speed 10kts. She was a general tramp steamer owned by Livanos & Sons LTD London. Since she is listed under Greece, presumably flew the Greek flag. She was apparently built for Welsh owners as a tramp as NOLISEMENT and renamed DARIUS in 1927, her MARIKA PROTOPAPA name acquired in 1933. Most of the above from "The World's Merchant Fleets 1939" by Roger Jordan. Thank your Dad for his service
