For me, definitely, this is one movie that's timeless and ever so enjoyable.
As already mentioned here, another good one is Legally Blond.
Hmmm, I wonder about including Galaxy Quest, though. I enjoyed the movie but I don't think it qualifies as a chick flick.

Then go out and rent them Now !
They are both excellent movies. though if truth be told, neither is what I would call a chick flick.
The Fifth Element is a Sc-Fi comedy-action movie starring Bruce Willis, while the Princess Bride is a spoof fairy tale for grown ups.

The film I would recommend is a Baz Luhrmann film, Strictly Ballroom. This Australian comedy about ballroom dancing is a gem. Its the film I put on if I'm feeling down and I want to cheer myself up

Whoa . . . I take a day off to go for a bike ride and I come back to a lot of missed action on this thread!

For those of you who have not seen Princess Bride, see it! I would not call it a chick flick. It is a film that transcends gender, age and education level. If you cannot enjoy it, you were never a child and you never had dreams!

I can't say that I see any real merit in When Harry Met Sally. It is already dated.

Fabulous Baker Boys is a fine movie. I used to work with David Kelly's best friend (best man at the wedding, I think). Michelle Pfeiffer allegedly came in to our firm one day but I was not there. Very sad.

All of the musicals listed are great!

What is the definition of a Chick-Flick ?
I thought it was something they request?
    Something they'll sit through?
    Something they wont talk during?
    Something they'll rewind?
Does it have to be a tear-jerker?
Boring, stupid, emotional, Fem-Nazi, man-hater dribble like the Lifetime channel? (men are bad & they'll always hurt you)
I slept through terms of endearment, so if that was one, I've no idea what was in it. Worked better than any sleep-aid.
Never saw (fell for the hype of) Love Story, and never owned a copy of Frampton Comes Alive either. Not a real "trend" follower.
    Who has the definitive answer?

You're not the first to be "dazzled:confused:" by that, so I'll give you the same answer I gave them.
Almost every I/we knew had one, and some carried it with them (pitiful).
I don't know about your turntable (ancient), but mine wouldn't play more than one record (ancient) of the same thing at the same time.
Sorta like trying to put two boots on the same foot.
No need, and with radio (ancient) play time, it became too much, too fast, too often.
I refer to this condition as "Sound-Burn".

I'll jump in!! I'm going to cheat and say that most of them are feel good movies, even if there are some points in some that could make you cry (heck some War movies make me cry and they should touch anyone who sees them; however, since they are addressed elsewhere I'll leave most of them out.)

Some are classics and most have strong female characters or they become strong or learn how to go after what is important to them. I'm not big on movies that demean men in order to make the female character appear superior or vice versa. So my list includes:

    Adams Rib
    Pat & Mike
    Breakfast at Tiffanys
    Born Yesterday (1950)
    Whale Rider
    Pretty Woman
The Philadelphia Story (both versions work for me - the second mostly for the music of Bing and Frank)
    Dirty Dancing
Holiday Inn (Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire - music and dance and romance!)
    The Thin Man series
    Funny Girl
    It Happened One Night
    Gone With the Wind
    Casablanca
    The Way We Were
    Romancing the Stone
    Moonstruck
    Working Girl
    Sleepless in Seattle
    The American President
    While You Were Sleeping
    The First Wives Club
    Stepmom
Anything with Katherine Hepburn or Audrey Hepburn
    Love Actually
    What A Girl Wants
    The Notebook
    Pride of the Yankees
The Natural (maybe not so much a chick flick as a story that can appeal to both genders); I feel the same about "The Rookie"
Of course, It's A Wonderful Life and Frank Capra movies would also work

You pick good flicks, Michelle. Almost all of the above are Five-star winners, espeically the B&W ones. I'm trying hard to get my daughters interested in old movies. So far they like the musicals such as My Fair Lady and my eldest if very fond of Breakfast at Tiffany's and An Affair To Remember. I love The Thin Man flicks. Willaim Powell and Myrna Loy worked well together. I also like the Topper movies.

I forgot about the Topper movies.... hmm, I need to add virtually anything with Cary Grant or David Niven - I was also always a fan of Erroll Flynn...

I need to add one to Macrusk's list (can't believe I forgot this one).

Wuthering Heights (1939). Sir Laurence Olivier at his very finest. Heathcliff is the stable boy who grows up with Kathy, vowing to be her Prince, but in their teens, when Kathy's brother, and Kathy mistreat him, Heathcliff runs away to seek his fortune. When Heathcliff does return a wealthy man, the brother is a drunk, deeply in debt, while Kathy has married a local land baron. Heathcliff the sets out to destroy Kathy and her brother, all the while pining away for Kathy. It's powerful stuff. If you memorize some of Heathcliff's wonderful verbage, as well as the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, no woman is immune from hearing those words and not swooning.

Ahem . . . . I happen to love Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews had a lovely voice before her throat problems and Dick Van Dyke played comic roles brilliantly before his problems with the bottle!

Michelle you are a woman of fine and discriminating taste! The classics on your list are outstanding films but I would not consider them chick flicks. I have seen everything that both Audrey and Katharine Hepburn ever did and I have watched all of their movies repeatedly. Most of the contemporary films that you have listed I do consider chick flicks but I shall add them to my list of films to watch . . . . except for Dirty Dancing . . . . I just can't!
