The following self-published book is offered now on Ebay. I already have my copy. A HELL OF AN EDUCATION! - The Story of a British Paratroop Signaller 1942-1947 by Jack Hewitt. Edited and privately published by Doug F. Willies. This rare publication, in ring binder format, is an incredible read from cover to cover. Jack Hewitt's army career is detailed with much information regarding the movements of his unit and vividly brought to life with the recollections of the man himself. Through training, then posting to North Africa with 1st Airborne Divisional Signals & 1st Parachute Brigade, into action in Italy and then on a brief secondment to Popski's Private Army (an early branch of special forces). Afterwards, there followed a return to the U.K. and then back into the heat of battle at Arnhem and a desperate fight to escape. Jack later served in Denmark, Malaya, Singapore, Java, Palestine & Trans-Jordan until he was demobilized in 1947. The accounts of the Arnhem Battle and Jack's subsequent escape cover two, gripping chapters which can only have been written by a man who had been there - "The next scene that comes to mind is waking up in the cellar of a house that was being used as an RAP and being propped up against an oven door. My ears were ringing and I was covered in mud. The floor was covered with dead and wounded".... "The Spandau was firing long ear splitting bursts throught the damp, dark night. It was like a giant zip fastener being fiercely opened and closed at great speed". The reader is transported back, via Jack's evocative words, to the brutality of battle and the tense, desperate attempt to escape in an ever decreasing foothold within Arnhem. An absolute must have for any serious collector of Arnhem or Airborne related books and a great gift for Xmas as book is brand new. There are many, many photographs, some with previously unidentified personnel at Arnhem and for the technical buffs there are plenty of radios shown as well. I think you will enjoy it, Scott. I am a sucker for these veterans written memoirs...especially when they are self published. Most, if not all, pictures are already known, but the stories are a good read.
