» Hi . First of all , I want to say sorry , if my english isn't the best . I'm an 18-year old student from Denmark . I have to write an assignment about the Second World War and I really need your help ! I've heard a lot about the situation in Germany . But in this assignment I have to focus on England and "The Blitz" - How was the situation at the time in England what is "The Blitz"? My teacher told me to work with a movie named "Hope and Glory" by John Boorman . Can someone tell me a little about it ? Thank you so much, Cong Chua
Hello Cong Chua and welcome to the forum. Your english is fine as we have many people here from all over the world so you are not alone. Here are some links that will get you started. You may also use our SEARCH function using "Battle of Britain" as keywords and look at our archived posts. Plenty of information to be had. Good luck. Liverpool museums - May Blitz: docks & city | Spirit of the Blitz Another good one off the track from London Blitz, but you should look at few other major cities as well as London that were blitzed too. Not to same extent but no less a testing time..
Welcome Cong-Chua - your English is very good How about what the Krauts did to Coventry with their bombs?? In the Mondlichtsonate(Moonlight Sonata) the Krauts used three main forces of 439 bombers on the night of 14 November 1940 to drop thousands of incendiaries Sgtleo
The 'Blitz' was something of a popular misuse of the word - it wasn't 'Blitzkrieg' in the true sense. Although many UK towns and cities were 'blitzed', 'The Blitz' is usually taken as referring to the London Blitz which lasted from 7th September 1940 to 11th May 1941, during which time London was bombed for 57 consecutive nights. A quite useful precis can be found here... What was the blitz?
Without assuming too much, I do feel you mastery of English is just fine. Especially as my own Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, ect. is not only "it is too laugh", I have found that I can get my face slapped in three other languages as well! Here is a really fine "over-view" of what is known as the Battle of Britain, and it includes most of the "Blitz" horrors which the British had to endure for those nasty nights. http://www.raf.mod.uk/bob1940/bobhome.html Good luck on your paper BTW.
Why in my former school or university they dont teach or asked me those stuff??? I didnt study any militar aspect of WW2 never during all high
Hope this helps From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the 1987 film. For the BBC television drama, see Hope and Glory (TV series). Hope and Glory is a 1987 British comedy-drama-war film, written and directed by John Boorman. Boorman based the film on his own early life experiences of growing up in the Blitz in London during World War II.[1] [2] The title of the movie derives from the traditional British patriotic song "Land of Hope and Glory". The film received nominations for Academy Awards for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Plot Beginning just before the start of World War II, the movie tells the story of the Rohan family: Bill, his sisters Sue and Dawn, and his parents Grace and Clive, living in a suburb of London. After the war starts, Clive joins the army, whilst Grace continues to watch over the children. Seen through the eyes of a young boy, the "fireworks" provided by the Blitz every night are as exciting as they are terrifying. His family do not see things in quite the same way as the bombs continue to drop, their will to survive brings them closer together. The nightly raids do not provide the only drama, however, as his older sister falls for a Canadian soldier and finding her life turned upside down, soon discovers how valuable family is. The family eventually moves outside of their London suburban home to the home of Grace's parents. Sgtleo
